But... Manual transmissions aren't supposed to break!

Haven't posted about my own E46 here in a LONG time...

My 2000 323i 5 speed decided to drop second gear tonight, but picked up a nice rumble while coasting in neutral - so I got that going for me now.

Still devising a plan - though it might spell the end of the road for this car. There are a bunch of maintenance items that are also looming that make it tough to justify the overall expense. 160k miles now, and I'm proud to say that the car has never been babied.

It'll be a sad day if it goes down like that.

Just sharing - Fanatics has been that car's cyber home since 2003...

Sorry to hear.

Just for reference, what gear oil were you running? OEM? Royal Purple? Not that this could have saved it, just curious.

It was due for a change, but it was a mix of two Redline weights - UUC's recommended "cocktail" for reducing gear chatter from the LTW Flywheel.

All signs point to a failure near the shift linkage, as the gearing itself is fine for 1,3,4,5 and R... It's just the shift into 2 that is gone now.

Ken, fix it up and run it another 100K! New car payments will be more than the maintenance.

If you do decide to go to something else, you should check out factory five and get this kit: http://www.factoryfive.com/rdsterhome.html

TransmissionFest to the rescue. Get a used box and haul it over here. We'll swap it in a day.

EDIT: Well, that's assuming a certain X5 is finally mobile. Friggin transfer cases.

Sorry to hear. Mine did the same thing at the start of this year. Had it replaced. It happens with the getrags that bmw put in the baby sixes. I think it is the getrag 250 that went in the z3's, e36's and e46's. Doesn't happen much as a failed reverse drum, but.......

So does that mean Ken is getting a new trans?

Nice to hear, Ken, if that's so!

It has 160k on it bro, you might as well just replace the tranny. What are you gonna get for it?

Picking up a used box tomorrow. $350 from a recycler.

We were afraid the exhaust would be trouble - the fasteners had a good bit of rust and crud. Luckily, it came apart tonight without tremendous effort.

Should be fun!

Thanks to teamdfl for hosting TransmissionFest (and doing more than his share of labor...)

Long day, but the trans has been replaced. Overall, it was a pretty smooth job. Teamdfl did most of the heavy lifting!

Well? Did it burn to the ground yet?

I'm still sore from pressing the trans up into place 3 or 4 times with one arm and one knee.
