My Ride: 2001 325i Sedan
Exclamation 51A inspection

Model:2001 325i manual sedan

I tried to reset the "service engine soon" and all I see is

[cODE 51A]

And the "service engine soon" remains..

This is the procedure I tried, but no luck:

"To reset the indicator:
-The car should be off
-hold down the left instrument button (the trip odometer reset)
-while holding the key, turn the ignition to position 1 (radio)
-you will see a test menu
-keep holding the button
-after maybe 10 seconds, the word "reset" will appear
-let go of the button and press again
-the indicator is reset!"

The oil change and inspection indicators are not the same thing as the Service Engine Soon (SES) light. Are you referring to the service indicator message in the cluster's digital display or are you talking about the SES light? The SES can't be reset by the procedure you listed. That procedure is for resetting the oil change and inspection reminders. I use my Peake tool to reset the service intervals but my understanding is that you should expect a message such as "end SIA" when completing the above procedure. You're probably misreading "SIA" as "51A". Perhaps what you're seeing is telling you the procedure is complete and that your next service will be an inspection as opposed to an oil change.

If you have the actual SES light illuminated, then you have a problem with the car which needs to be addressed. Until the problem is fixed, the light won't go away. In order to find out what the problem is, you would need to begin by scanning the car to retrieve all diagnostic trouble codes which are stored. This can't be done via the OBC, you will need an OBDII or Peake scan tool. Better yet, just take it to a shop that knows BMWs.
