Run finger under engine cover on passenger (rt.) side.
Look for burned oil stains on exhaust manifold heatshield...the two aluminum 'fins' running along the rt. side of engine, just below the cover. If you see brown on the aluminum, 99.9% valve cover gasket. It's a common rite of passage here! Photos probably would help, and you 'can' post them...scroll down to 'manage attachments.' Doug

Do a search using the term VCG (valve cover gasket) and DIY... and it you will get everything you need (assuming you have a VCG leak -- also search "burning oil smell"). The VCG is an easy DIY. Depending on your mileage... you may want to consider changing your spark plugs while your in there. That will only add about 10 minutes to the job. Others may suggest VANOS seals... but I will leave that to you. Good luck.

I doubt this is your problem, but it is a common oil leak also. Search for oil filter housing gasket.

It an easy fix, if that's the main cause , which most of the time it is.
