Smile Alarm Will Not Arm with FOB or Key

All of a sudden my key FOB does not work to open the doors or set the alarm, etc... I thought it was the battery in the FOB. But I also noted that manually locking the car does work. But I cannot arm the alarm system.

Any thoughts as to what is the root cause?

Question FOB will not activate alarm or central locking system - It's not the FOB battery

[QUOTE=lfaber;13445268]All of a sudden my key FOB does not work to open the doors or set the alarm, etc... I thought it was the battery in the FOB. But I also noted that manually locking the car does work. But I cannot arm the alarm system.

Any thoughts as to what is the root cause?

2001 E46[/QUOTOkay I dug a bit deeper. I checked the FOB battery and it is charged (surprising).

So the key will start the car, and lock the doors manually. It will not work remotely. The car alarm will not arm when I use key the either.

Can someone explain what the key communicates with when I press one of the buttons?

I'll continue to surf the forums.

I am not surprised the battery is fine. I've never found a dead rechargeable battery in a BMW key fob. If the fob doesn't work, but, the door locks work in the door then there are several things it could be. Check out this web page I made www.bmwgm5.com/no_fob.htm

Another thing, did you dork up the key fob circuit board when you opened it. I got a key for repair today that had two missing components. The owner was a little over zealous when cutting it open and now wants me to fix it. Since they are in the RF section they aren't simple to figure out. I'm going to have to transplant the missing capacitor from a donor key since the value is too low to measure on my RLC meter.

If the car does not lock/unlock and arm with the key in the door or the key fob then something is wrong with the GM5 module or a fuse and most likely not a fob problem. Check the fuses for central locking too. I assume the central locking button does nothing either. Also check the door ajar indicator on the dash. Locking won't work if the driver's door is open. The state of the other doors does not matter.
Thanks for the reply Scott. Here is the situation:

* FOB battery good
* FOB useless
* key operates central locking system
* All doors etc seem to be closing okay
* key will not activate alarm (2 turns)
* I have tried resetting the key (that ignition sequence, etc..) NADA
* Checked all fuses - look good
* need to research form and function of the module. Have read some posts on the topic... Need to research more.
* co-incidental to this, I fixed my driver side mirror which was seized solid (would not fold into car). Bloody Canadian salt!

German engineering has finally caught up to me LOL.

I might be off but I had the same issue. The only difference was that, for me it happened intermittently. Every now and then nothing was responding to the damn remote. Never managed to figure out what was going on. Recently, the original 11 years old 70Amp battery finally gave up. Swapped with a 94Amp Merc battery and eversince my alarm started working properly again. Maybe somebody with electrical experience can let us know their thoughts on the subject.

You are not off at all. Before it stopped working, performance was intermittent. However the battery was changed 2 years ago.

I appreciate your comments and interest.
