check engine light was a p1028 code?a little help needed

ok guys so i went to autozone the guy was a friend of a friend and checked it and let me know what the code means and it came up p1028 he looked it up and it could be 3 things.one was coolant level second was a thermostat and third was a etc or ect electronic temperature control or something to that effect,(i lost the damn reciept with the info on it at the moment).this came as a surprise to me cause its been very hot on the east coast this summer and ive driven my car in the 2 weeks ive had her about 300 miles.the temperature gauge stays pinned at half never moves when driving or in idle.so i would of never thought it was that.does anyone have any experience with this code?any help is greatly appreciated thanx

The code itself means your car is not warming up fast enough.

It could be your thermostat is stuck open, it could be a temp sensor, or it could be just a bad coolant mixture (too much antifreeze, not enough water)
Money is on the first two suggestions.

It's amazing to me that a non M E46 is such a beautiful car but the E46 M has never done much for me.

ok sounds about right ,i added 50/50 anti-freeze from autozone just to see if that would get the light to show off cause the dipstick was all the way down when i opened up the radiator cap.but then someone told me my bmw takes special coolant i can only get at the dealer.

The stickers on Xerex coolant have a pre-installed static charge to protect the coolant from aging.

JK...but, you shouldn't really mix coolants...what color coolant did you have before?

Look at your gauge carefully next time you drive...when therm is stuck open, on the highway, you'll notice the gauge might drop below normal, even by a little bit, it means the thermostat has failed.

It could be the temp sensor, but honestly, I can't recall ever reading that one has failed. I'm sure they do, but many here just replace it anyway as part of a cooling overhaul.

Also, DO NOT OVERFILL the ET...the balls should straddle the top of the ET's filler neck...coolant should be 5.5" below the top edge of the neck...I measured!

i think my next step is to get my thermostat changed.and another question is if and when the problem is fixed ,like if the problem is the coolant will the light automatically go off? cause i know some cars the engine light needs to be reset

Please use BMW Coolant and Distilled Water. The BMW cooling system is not designed to handle anything else.

Putting Autozone coolant in there will make your CE light the least of your worries.

im pretty new to the whole coolant world.especially with the sensitive bmw type antifreeze.id really need a run though when i do it since your saying to dilute it with distalled water, ive never heard that before.but i wanted to flush the coolant for sure and do the zerex one or if your saying the bmw one id do that instead just to be sure.

peterock -

BMW Coolant is $19 a jug

that Xerex stuff seems pricey!

After all it is gold coolant that last 5 years and 150,000 miles!

The price may have went up but It will still be around $19 to $22 a gallon. Green Generic Autozone Coolant is like 3.99 a gallon I think so $19 is expensive.
