Cold start - Check engine light
I started the car early this morning, while I was on the phone, the engine shook hard and the check engine light came on. I restarted the car and the light did not come back on for about 10 seconds so I went to work. Scanned it and had no codes. The engine has a shake to it in the morning but it was much worse today. Car has 138000km. What might be the problem? I just did a oil change.

Could be a misfire (most probable) or a number of other things like CCV going out, dirty or bad MAF, ICV, DISA, dirty fuel filter/injector. When was the last time you changed these things? At that milage a lot of those things start to wear out. I'd get a bottle of Seafoam and clean the engine intake side with 1/3 or a bottle and the other 2/3 in the fuel tank and oil crank case just before an oil change. I'd clean the MAF and the ICV and check the DISA and check the lower intake boots for rips

I replaced the CCV maybe 4-5 months ago. Is there a good DIY you can link me too clean the DISA, ICV. I was meaning to seafoam it this oil change but didn't get the chance. Do I use the brake booster line? Also my friend says let the seafoam sit for a few hours then start it up and shoot the carbon deposits out, is that correct?

If you restarted the car and the light is off, then there's not much to do but wait and see... The good news is, "wait and see," is free. |

The car did not die it was turned on just as if I were to drive away. Shook hard, the light came on and continued to shake but less severe after the light came on.

I've had this happen, turned out to be my CCV. But can be anything from spark plugs to vacuum leak. You just have to just wait and play the game

Check your hose from SAP to sap valve...and the small hose leaving that valve.
Had something similar happen to me a while back. The car stalled. I restarted. It stalled. I restarted again, kind of angry, gunned the engine and it stayed lit. But, later that day, I found a hole had eaten through the bottom of the large SAP hose and sent a ball of 'inside hose gunk' into the inlet of the sap valve. I replaced the hose, cleaned out the gunk with a dental pick, and all has been good. I actually also opened up the pump to find the filter slightly oily; I'm assuming from having sucked in oil laden air from my leaking vcg, but that's just a theory. HTH

This could be anything but cold start shake and noise are also signs of a vanos seal problem.

I was having a similar problem. Cleaned the TB, ICV and the car starts normal again. Try unplugging your DISA too
