Just filled her up yesterday when I had 5 miles left and it put it up to 398 miles, pretty darn good I thought! Mostly highway cruising to work.

I get anywhere between 300-320 miles per tank. 80% highway, 20% city.

I'll get 330-350 if I drive without any quick bursts, WOTs, etc.

I'll usually go one of the following:

1. Regular driving (40% city, 40% Highway, 20% "fun") which will get me about 270 miles on a tank

2. Highway (long road trip, 95% highway) 320-350 miles on a tank

3. "Fun" (sport button usually on the entire time) 190 miles on a tank

For average use the M3 does pretty well, especially considering you can have fun and drive like a normal person

This last tank I've pulled Around 395 miles from it, with 50 miles to go. According to the OBC.

Average now is at 27.8 mpg, combined.

I get between 250-275 miles to a tank, every time... Does not fail. 275 is a treat. I think I may have gotten 310 miles once, all highway.

This is a combination city/highway on my way to work.

The key is that "this is all city driving." Between the periods of time spent idling (0 mpg), the time accelerating from a rest to speed (8 to 10 mpg), and the time spent in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gears, rather than 6th, it's no wonder your mileage is terrible. It takes far more energy to accelerate the car from a rest to 40 mph than it does to simply cruise at a steady 70 mph. Don't believe me? Park your car in neutral on a flat stretch of asphalt and push it. Contrast the amount of energy you need to exert to get the car moving with the amount required to keep it moving after the acceleration period is done. Moreover, at city speeds you aren't going fast enough to put the engine in its sweet spot for maximum efficiency in 6th gear. Finally, if your commute is short, a good portion of your running time is on a cold engine with cold oil.

I average 234 miles before filling; mix of city/highway. I fill it before the light comes on because I don't always trust that the sucking jet pump is returning fuel to the passenger side lobe of the tank.

Dumb question but are you guys going by your MPG on the computer or actually calculating it by looking at the gas pump and how many miles you went?

I do both. Both come out very close to each other.

For city driving... lightweight... Less mass to move, means easier to move.

You are moving the same mass at 70 mph as you are moving at 30. Accelerating any mass requires more energy than maintaining the same mass at a fixed speed. Moreover, at speed, aerodynamics play as big a role, or bigger, than mass, as it requires more energy to displace the air that the car will fill at speed than it would take to move the mass of the car in a vacuum.

Best I got was from LA to Vegas which was about 80-90mph the whole way at night very nice weather sunroof open no ac I did 290 miles with 1 stop and I had a little over 1/4 tank to go. On the other hand my everyday drive to work 75% highway 25 city I get less then 260-280 miles per tank filling up with the light betterly on. But I'll be honest I got a heavy foot just love this cars sound after 4000 however only had the car for 3 weeks now

These are my last 10 fill up's. I don't drive this car all that much, but when I do its on the highway. I set the cruise control at 80 and the results are as shown. I ride a motorcycle to/from work 99% of the time - there is no parking close to where I work for a car (DC sucks for public parking)
