Help with choosing amplifier
hey i am looking at this sub
http://www.polkaudio.com/caraudio/sp...10inch/mm2104/ it says peak power is 600 watts so i guess i have to get an amp thats 600 watts strong? (noob) anyways i want to know your opinion on amps, i dont want to spend too much but i do want to get great sound, i saw some JL's but i have no idea how they are, polks are like $900 so i was looking for something along 400-500. please help me out! also, itll be great if it looks cool too! i appreciate it!

You'll do well with this amp:

you don't necessarily need a 600 watt amp. It says it's a 300 wrms sub which means it can play at 300 watts for long periods of time without hurting the sub and the sound. The 600 watts peak means it can take up to 600 watts of power in a sort burst without blowing the sub. you should be fine with an amp from 300 - 400 watts. just make sure thats 300-400 watts continuously (rms) and not peak power.

ok, i was sure about the RMS but not sure about how powerful the amp must be since itll go up to 600. thanks! but ive done more research and apparently the 8inch on is easier to intsall, i plan on doing the ski pass install,
what setup do you guys have? i just want to assist the HK ones i dont want to replace them, can i do that? so illbe adding an 8 or 10 inch one to give the HK ones support

I think you'd be better off just not running the HK subs and just going with a good 8 or 10 inch sub. having the 2 subs might cause some cancelation.

i agree with what most have already stated. you should not buy an amp based on the subs max power. you will blow it in no time. you can calculate the RMS power from the max power -> Prms = Pmax / sqrt(2) which would require an amp pushing 425W. Honestly you wouldnt even need an amp that big, especially for 1 sub, but that also depends on how loud you would listen to it.
as for the 3 sub cancellation thats not true. lots of people use a 3 sub system, but the subs are all of the same quality ususally. the HK subs arent very clear. if you get a system that has good quality, the mix it with one with bad, then you are effectively ruining your sound. its the same theory as you are only as strong as your weakest link. you are only going to sounds as good as your worst speaker. most people arent picky about bass though, so it probably wont be a huge deal. |

i like the HK i dont think they are unclear so i guess if i notice a difference itll be when i add a third sub, i plan on going with the 8 incher. 200 RMS

If you don't mine me making a suggestion...if you are going to do the ski-pass installation, i would consider a soundsplinter subwoofer. I actually had one in a sealed box through my ski pass (look in sig) and it worked pretty well. Unfortunately, I decided that I wanted a little more bass so now the same subwoofer is in a ported enclosure, but the soundsplinter rli-8 that I have really is a little monster for a slightly higher price. www.soundsplinter.com - check it out, the sub that I have is the RLi 8", but since you have a coupe, you should be able to fit a 10" in there.
As far as amps go, I currently have a JL 500/1 which you can find on ebay brand new for about $200 or online at other websites for about $350. |
