3.64 or 3.91?? which to go with

hey everyone. im looking to change out my stock diff from my 02 33oci for a quicker more responsive differential. i read up on kpengs diff swap and like the improvements, however im still a little hesitant.

can i have some opinions on which to get the 3.64 or the 3.91. is the labor needed to install them the same (e.g., the 3.91 needing the longer drive shaft, etc)?

thanks in advance!

I'm running a 3.64 with a 6-spd and 7k rpm rev limit and can't imagine wanting to go any shorter. Don't know the specifics of your car but I can't imagine running either with a 5-spd and 6500 rpm rev limit. Most people don't go any shorter than a 3.46. This is all assuming a manual transmission, if you have an auto then things might be a little different.

I know the autos have taller transmission gearing so my previous comments are largely irrelevant. Looking at all the ratios, I think I might opt for the 3.91 myself as this is the same setup as the X3 2.5i. Maybe others will chime in. Since this diff came with the X3 2.5i auto, I imagine it should be a direct swap.

Subscribed. OP do you have a link to the did swap discussed in the opening post. I just picked up a 01 325i and it definitely needs to wake up!

With the auto I'd say 3.91 for sure!

op i think you have a 3.38 diff i have a 3.46 diff and a guy to do the labor. if your interested in a slight boost we can do the swap and you pay for my labor on my end shouldn't be that steep at all

Didn't most autos come with 3.46?

Anyways, go with the 3.91 ratio. I think Kpeng's opinion is worth more than most...as that's what I am planning to do.

3.38 to 3.46 is a completely worthless swap.

Do you have the ZF or GM tranny? If ZF, try to get the 3,91 from a x3 2,5 !MANUAL! as its 188k. the 3,91 from a x3 2.5 with auto is just 168k and therefore not engineered to withstand the torque.

you could buy a drive shaft from a 2.5 3series or change the input flange. just count the revolutions the input flange was tightened, change the flange and retighten it.

Why would ZF vs GM make a difference anyway?
