So you going to just take it, or maybe you want to tell us a little more so guessing stuff like battery, crank position sensor, key, etc...won't seem so random? LOL

Are you cranking...or does it matter? If it's on the flat bed, you've given up, I guess?

Unfortunately my car is sleeping.

OK, not a LOT to report just yet, but..... (just got home)

Was driving along and suddenly.... baaaah....vrooom....baaaaahhhh.....vrooom....baaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaa......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Weird. Almost definitely fuel or spark (as opposed to air or compression).

Mostly likely culprits:

Fuel filter
Pick-up in the gas tank
(very low on fuel but have run much lower than that)

Plugs and/or coilpacks
Maybe alternator, but I've had one go before and I had zero warning lights this time. Didn't seem like alternator.

I think it's probably fuel filter or pick-up.

Had it towed to a GREAT indy shop here in north Houston (Bimmer Workshop for those playing along in Houston). The owner showed up while I was finishing up with the wrecker driver. I should know something by mid-day tomorrow. Not complaining too much as I've owned her 8.5 years and she's been paid off for 3.5 years. As long as my sub-frame isn't giving me problems again and the repairs are not more than the value minus the scrap value, she's getting fixed. Despite having nearly 200k miles she's in better shape than most cars I've looked at recently with half the miles.

More as I know it.

BTW, flat bed #4 for die schlampe. 4x more than my last 3 cars combined!

My car has been sitting curbside in some random neighborhood for the last 5 days, I dropped a new fuel pump in it couple hours ago and she fired right up. It was either a flatbed tow back to my house or a fuel pump lol but not both. Good luck!

That's where I'd place my bet.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely let y'all know the verdict. I think I'm going to have a few other things done while she's there. I do MOST things myself, but she needs the pumpkin bushing replaced so we'll see what they quote me.

Fuel pump FTW.

Sadly, it went while I was on the freeway at rush hour, about 20 miles from home, so it necessitated a tow. I also didn't have time to trouble shoot it, so that meant taking to a shop. An excellent indy shop, but a shop none the less. My bunghole hurts now.....

The good news is my repaired subframe mounts are still intact so I'm getting the diff bushing replaced (my bunghole hurts again) and tonight I'm ordering some Konis to replace my horribly bad original (with 196k miles!) sport package dampers. The amazing thing is, the dampers were still great until less than 6 months ago! This car is so fragile in so many ways, the the dampers held up a LONG time.

I've been waiting until cooler weather here (it's been over 100F every day for a month) to tackle some long delayed maintenance. Yeah. I know. But, with the miles I've been debating just running it into the ground. I looked a couple of months ago at a few cars looking for a replacement (no car payments - trying to stay away from them for another year or so when I sell my house and buy another), but I was looking at cars with half the miles and were in FAR worse condition. Almost made a serious run at the M3 wagon that was for sale here for a while and sold on eBay for $17,100. Anyway, after looking at other cars (E46 and E39 touring) I decided to keep it and start fixing the myriad of minor annoyances.

So, lots of work to do this fall, the hardest of which (for me) will be the headliner and sunroof cassette.

Geo, what did you have to pay for the fuel pump transplant? I had mine go out while on a road trip, and it was not cheap to have a German car specialist shop replace it.

Glad to hear you discovered the problem and that you're back on the road. For the record 196,000 miles isn't a whole lot of miles. I am surprised that your suspension lasted that long. I replaced mine at 110,000 miles to include sports shocks, sports struts, sports dampers and sports springs. I'm currently just over 326,600 miles in 12 years of ownership.
