Just out of curiosity, how much does something like that cost to buy/build?

About $650- few thousand depending on what you want and optics. I'm at about $1700 without optics right now on one I'm building.

Oh really? Thats not nearly as bad as I thought. I thought is was like a $7000 rig!

So what do you guys do, buy a good "base" AR, and go to town? Are there different manufacturers of ARs?

Pardon my ignorance, I am new to the whole assault weapon thing.

There are several ways to go.
1. Buy a basic rifle and customize as you go
2. Buy a custom rifle
3. Buy a completed upper and build your own lower
4. Buy a completed upper and completed lower and slap them together
5. Buy all components separately and build from the ground-up.

Most people opt to either buy a rifle and customize, or buy a completed upper and build the lower.
If you feel confident or you have the training or knowledge, you will have the most fun and save the most money by buying all components separately and assembling yourself.

I am building my brother a sub-MOA capable varmint/target rifle with a 16" barrel right now, and it's only going to cost him $1300 (excluding scope and mount). You can do this stuff for reasonable prices if you know what items to buy and from where.

I'm at about $2600 on mine. And that's with lower end optics for now.

Adam is right, you can spend as little as $600 for a simple, yet reliable and effective AR. Optics can get expensive REAL fast though.

I think the best route for a first AR is to buy a complete upper and build the rest. Building a lower is a sinch.
