Fuel pump. Starter. Battery. Or best of all, EWS.

Summer time massive wave of bad fuel pumps. Everyone keep your gas tank full and fuel pump cool

I would have told you to add gas and listen to fuel pump. I'm afraid to hear what the mechanic says...I hope it's the truth!

You could have asked us before getting towed, you know? Bet it would cost less even if you added a full tank, replaced fuel pump, and starter.

Let us know what it was just to have it on our list of random guesses!

Good luck,Trick--both with car and school!

Cereally sucks OP..But if you paid more attention to minor details, this wouldn't have happened.

Even if the fuel pump in e46 is 'electric' type fuel pump, it does show symptoms of failure. I've been doing part-time mobile mechanic job in summer break, seen two cars strangely won't start occasionally.

First car, luckily, I noticed that there was no hissing noise on accessory position. Tried again, fuel pump made hissing noise, then started. This guy was high school student and low on budget, he decided to buy parts only and fix it later. After two months he called me and said, car wouldn't start and pump won't make hissing noise at all. I went there and replaced fuel pump, car came back to life. Second car had similar symptom, I checked everything and recommended her to replace fuel pump. I never heard back from her again..Hope that fixed the problem lol

It's not easy to pay attention to every small detail everytime, you'll have to be lucky to catch one. But next time when something abnormal happens, do suspect and do check.

I think it's to do with too many oil changes.
