There was no preload. The strut was off the car, spring compressed. Today I'm gonna try to grab the shock shaft with vice grips.
And I was dumb enought to do it in the evening before scheduled dyno so I had to reassemble the car.

EDIT: Just came back from the dyno, don't have the graphs yet. Pulled 330whp/310wtq

Couple of issues - the boost keeps rising to about 9.5PSI and it pings pretty bad if I stomp on it at low RPMs. I'll talk to ESS techs when I get the data.

nice numbers - that is about what we expected

sucks about the pinging - what brand and octane of fuel

Numbers should be higher with 9.5psi... unless your at like high elevation and lots of humidity. Still not bad either. This cars turning out very nice.

I didn't notice in this thread but do you have catless headers?.

I used a pipe wrench. They are made to grip when turning.

With either tool, be careful to not damage the shock. Some people use a old rubber glove to prevent marring the surface.

Yes, I got catless headers, stock exhaust.
The pinging only happens when I cruise and drop the hammer quickly.
The timing drops to 5 or 8 and then slowly rise to around 12.

The dyno pull was near sea level, about 70% humidity, around 60 degrees. The guy gave me a corrected number 317hp. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle.
Gas is Chevron 94.

I don't care about damaging the shock. They have 140k miles on them.

UPDATE: The front shocks are done. Grabbed the spring seat in the vise and hammered on the nut with impact gun.
Waiting for the rear spring seats to do the rear.

Here is the chart. You can see the nasty timing drop when I stepped on it.

Don't know. I had to cruise down to bellow 2000 RPMs so maybe it does something crazy like that when decelerating (engine braking).
It didn't do that on the second pull.

I'm gonna get a USB to OBDII cable and some software to monitor and log these things.
I'll ask ESS guys what monitoring tool they recommend.

EDIT: actually 24deg is normal on NA cars. The dyno tech said that ESS was likely shooting for around 12 to keep things safe on stock internals.

Thanks. It's in the FI section to avoid too much traffic. When the car is done I'll probably sum it up in a showroom thread.
I just need to do the rear shocks, O2 sims and hook up the boost/AFR gauges.
Then I'm done. (yeah, right )

Update: Suspension is done. First impression of the PSS10s is awesome. On the softest setting the comfort is similar to OEM sport yet it's way more responsive and less bouncy. I went over some speed bumps to settle the springs and I couldn't believe how fast I could go over them.
I used 15mm rear spring pads to help bringing the rear to the same fender gap as the front (rake).
This also helped with adjusting the ride height as Bilstein moved the adjustment to the top of the spring (compared to PSS9).

Still waiting for the O2 sims from Bimmerbrakes. WTF USPS? It's been over two weeks.

Can't wait to see this!

Where did you get your 15mm spring pads? I kind of want these too for my ST coilovers...the rears are so low and I don't want to pull the adjuster cup all the way down...seems kind of risky!

I will ask you more about those 02 sims later I think I will need them may be when I do my AP header install!

Yeah, that's why I got them so I wouldn't need to max out the adjuster cup. In fact I got two extra ones. You got PM

Couple of quick pics with the new shocks. The ride height will come down a bit. I'm just waiting for the springs to settle before making final adjustments.

Your car is looking very good and congratulations on your numbers.

I also have a white manual touring (325i) and just picked up a used Vortech V2 ESS kit. It will be a few weeks before I get it installed as I'm waiting on an insurance check from a hit and run accident in December and I want to get the body sorted first.

Is your bumper the normal ZHP part? The splitters seems a little less agressive than others I've seen. I'd love one on mine but I need ground clearance because of a steep driveway.

Thanks.
Yes, it's OEM ZHP (M-Tech II) bumper. Some people put extensions on their splitters and there is a chance some M-Tech replicas could have longer splitters.
I could probably park next to stock 325 and measure the difference.

i like the black trim on your car actually.
mind, i like the whole car. actually.
if i may add that much of an opinion: i'd probably get rid of the orangey bits and the chrome but other than that your car is slowly turning into porn

and yes, just from looking at it you'd never guess...

btw, lovely stance as well
