Eh... any performance it had was secondary... I'm more about aesthetics. And I spent 16k on mine, so it was hardly a status symbol, lol. I paid more for my Mazda!

I bought mine because I've always loved the car.....if some of this status that you speak of comes with it, then well that's ok too....and yes I like the performance as well as the style....

Both, i was looking at mercedes, acura, lexus, and infiniti, pretty much wanted something luxurious, maybe a bit sporty, good mileage, compact and then i found this gem. Never thought i would own a BMW

Bought mine because there was no way I was going from an Audi to anything less.
I only looked at high end brands. Not necessarily to impress anybody, more to have everything I want in one package.

I actually DID NOT want the status symbol. My car portrays an image that I cannot afford to keep up. I bought my car because I wanted a decently reliable, four door sedan, that was rear wheel drive with a sweet manual gearbox. The only reason I got rid of my IS300 was to get back to driving a manual, and the manual IS300's drive like poop.

I have loved the way these cars look since they came out, and in high school these were the cars I lusted after, so that is always a plus I suppose.

If I wanted status then I wouldn't have given up driving my Porsche

(I hate status items)

My Ride: Fst'r then your e46
Id say both. e46s arent really performance cars, only the m3 (in my opinion), but they live a long time. BMW is a upgrade on the status from whatever you owned previously, at least for me it did. I am proud to say I own a bmw.

I bought mine because it is the perfect daily driver. Peppy, rwd, looks great from the factory and with some money can look jaw droppingly amazing, superior handling, surprisingly good mpg, and a little bit of bmw panache mixed in as well.

Besides, my 325i for example is 9 years old and is outclassed by other cars in straight line speed and some cars of the era have nicer interiors too. But in the end I picked a $7500 bmw over a similarly priced civic, integra, or some other japanese econobox because the bmw does most things better, its a jack of all trades master of some.

And after driving my friends' e36's I decided I wanted a bmw, but a more refined one and the e46 fits the bill perfectly.

Long story short I didn't base my decision solely on performance and status (because I'm not a huge douchebag) I bought a bmw because for the money its hard to find a car that does everything my bmw does right without sacrificing much if anything.

German performance. Got sick of VW's, can't afford a mercedes so it was a Great choice! Started with an e30 in 03 and skipped to an e46 5 years later.

I guess if you got a used one status would not apply. I admit when I ordered mine and had to wait for the delivery it felt special. That said the e46 was my fourth bimmer so performance it's why I got it.

My previous ones were used E12, E30, E34. Had new MB's and Caddys after the E46, there has not been a better BMW yet IMO to replace it.
