I bought mine because everything fell perfectly into place. I just wish it was a manual

I would say I bought mine for both. Let's face it guys although we know the value of the cars, the average person doesn't realize how much they are. All they notice is that its a BMW.

On a side note I think styling should be an option. The E46 has great lines.

All of the above, in this order:

1) Long life (mine has 186,000 miles, and seems to want to keep going for a long time)
2) Performance
3) Looks/status (looks is what is most important to me in this category)

Neither.. my e46 328 isn't fast and not even a status symbol anymore since its an obsolete model.

I buy them because I just like the way the car handles and the sound of the sweet BMW straight six purrs!

I bought my bmw because it was a better all rounder than my audi a4 3.0 quattro. The a4 just weighed too much and that 3.0 v6 just didn't make up for it. To me a car is only as good as it performs. That is for all aspects. It must have purpose and I think the e46 does pretty well.

I wanted something that

* looked good (at the track or a business meeting)
* drove REALLY well (on the rare occasions I had the chance to open it up - 47:53)
* was considered safe (so I could take my godson out)
* was comfortable (for my long commute)
* was reliable
* was RWD
* could hit 40 mpg (UK)
* was faster than moron ricers
* had ALL the toys

What else was I going to pick?

Yep. The perceived status is one of the few things I don't like about my cars.

I got my ride because I have always wanted one. Its fun! Status??? We are driving 3 series...
I would equate status with those individuals that are driving the 6-series convertible, the 7-series and Alpina. aka: the $100,000 plus cars.

Looking at my garage here on this forum you can see that I keep these just for status...

Because it met my requirements. 1. I wanted a convertible that could be a daily driver to supplement my 1967 Firebird. 2. It had to have a backseat, so there was room for my daughter, 3. it had to handle well, and be rear wheel drive 4. be good looking with a nice interior, and 4. German. This is because every American convertible made in the last 35 years has been a POS with the possible exception of the latest generation Mustang, Camaro and Corvette. Bottom line the e46 was the best all around four seat convertible made by any manufacturer at the time. Finally it needed to be priced right. Since it is literally my station car, I wasn't comfortable leaving a $50k+ car sitting at the train station every day. A good friend of mine was trading it in to the Dealer in Jan 2007 when it had 37,000 miles. I paid him the $18k the dealer offered, and it has worked out great. Bottom Line, I agree that this is a bit of a silly poll as most people factor many requirements into deciding what car to get. It not binary between prestige and performance.

i bought mine cuz im in LOVE with the e46 m3, but couldnt afford it lol, with that...my 330ci is a beautiful car. sometimes after i wash it, i stare at it from my window.

but i bought mine for the 'driving experience' and looks, i had a e36 328i before this.

i actually cant stand the 'status' that comes with it. people automatically think your ballin out of control or your a dousche bag (or both), and they automatically have pretencious attitudes towards you.

the day after i bought my car for $13k, i went to work, and everybody was like man how much are they paying u, you must be makin lots of money lol
somtimes i wish my bmw logo said kia on it lol

Ironically, the car I ended up with was the last car I drove when looking for a new ride (never saw myself in a BMW, always thought they were Big-Money-Wasted)

Drove the M3 first, and of course I loved it, just didn't want it as my daily driver.

Drove the auto first, hated it; drove the 6-speed, and I fell in love with the car.

I definitely drive it for the performance, and the fact that the car has amazing lines and a gorgeous interior as well, and it gets decent gas mileage.

The next car will either be an 09+ 335i/d, or a C63, but I see myself keeping this car forever already lol

I bought my car because I like quality products. It Got good gas mileage and i wanted high end features, but also a sporty personality. I love my xenon lights and leather just as much as the sporty feel. And I love looking at it! Timeless design

+1 day after I bought my car, went to work and my boss asked me what I got, I said a 04 BMW 3 series. He said omg! No wonder you need so many hours. I asked him how much he paid for his gay scion XB and he paid more for his cheap Toyota based car then I did for a quality sport sedan

I got mine because it was in immaculate shape, maintenance had been done, and I got a steal on it. I was looking at Acura TL's before I found me 3-series.
