My Ride: Touring, and others
I've driven BMW automobiles since the early 70's. It just never entered my mind to buy anything else. Same with the Wife's new sedan. Now she is looking at the new 6 convertible, and nothing else even comes close. I'll hang onto the Touring though. It's the best of both worlds.

I guess a little of both? I definitely appreciate the performance, but there are faster and better handling cars out there. I don't care about the status symbol per se, but I do want the creature comforts that come w/ the car as a result of it being a status symbol

I think it depends on what you're comparing. Obviously the models that are designed to be "low-end" (325i, etc...) is going to be lacking compared to the other makes' flagship vehicles. Also vehicles that are designed for performance *only* (e.g Evo, STi) and vehicles that cost a lot more (e.g P-cars) are obviously going to perform better too.... but if you compare the cars against the market they're intended for, BMW usually (not always) ends up on top for performance. M3 vs S4 vs C32 -- M3 spanked all of them around the track... same held true for the "general" E46 vs B5 vs W203. And since you often mention Nissan, IMO a 330i was an overall a better car than the G35... The HR variant may've been quicker in a straight line, but none of them handled that well.

I only threw in the ZCP comment because I couldn't justify that price for a pretty standard package (not the lowest obviously, but still...) On top of that, gray interior is the least desireable (and a complete deal breaker at any price for me personally) Aaaaannd I'm not a fan of verts, lol Great color though!
Yeah, I think the price is high too....but a 2006 M3 with 3k miles is pretty special. While gray is not my favorite color. I'm okay with it in a convertible for cooler seats.

I bought it because I wanted a drivers car.

Not to say I don't get flattered by the comments, but at the end of the day I wanted it because of the smile it puts on my face when I drive it.

I wouldn't call the BMW a real performance car unless it was an M. However it is definitely a drivers car and I get a lot of pleasure from driving my 330.
So for me its neither performance or status.
I have had jap cars that have been better performance wise but they were not as enjoyable to drive as my ex 325 or my current 330.

Similar story I guess. Needed something that I could DD for sales calls that I liked but didn't make me look like a total prick

Neither?

They're fun to drive and have an up-ish-scale image associated with them, but srsly, this is an E46 forum.

There isn't much of a choice for a manual RWD luxury brand sport sedan from the e46 era.
You have the ugly double headlight Benz C-class, fugly and gas hog IS300, and forget about the CTS. Seriously, BMW e46 was no brainer.

My family and I have always loved BMWs, they look great and they drive spectacularly well. That's why I got one. I love my E46, it's good looking and, most importantly, a blast to drive! Also, as previously stated, I'd much rather drive a BMW than anything else.

The G35 stomped mudholes in the BMW. It may have not been the most polished, but it did have better objective numbers.

And the newest M3 is a pile of shit in my book. Just saying.

funny, ive always thought exactly that about the z3. No offence.

My fiance had a g35 then a g37. G35 was a cooler by far bc of more aggressive styling, still aint no Bmw but decent. Dam thing always needed an oil change, used conventional oil that forced a 3500mile interval. She has a '12 911 now, she loves it more than anything shes ever driven including any of mine.
