FWIW, I live in Illinois, just north of Chicago, it rains Benzes, Audis, and BMWs here, it makes me want to punch people in the face. . .ha. But OP is right, I can embarrassingly spot a Borla exhaust on mid 90s Z28 Camaro from 1/2 mi. away (my vision is super tuned to notice cars and their mods), and I have never seen an E46 M3 w/ a hardtop ever, I've seen one E36 (non-M) w/ a hardtop and that was in 1998.

just because you don't spot any in IL, that makes it rare?

That hardtop is as rare as the car itself, not very. You can get away with saying it's "rare" on craigslist, but not here. GLWS!

I'd say they are definitely more endangered than the panda bears that abound by our beautiful lakeshore bamboo trees which you've no doubt seen in such movies as Ferris Buller's Day Off, Home Alone, and Breakfast Club.

It's also safe to say that is far more "rare" than those "limited" Jeep Grand Cherokees, etc.

Even more rare than my mom's "diamond edition" Camry in the mid-1990s. . .note to self, go update the Camry wikipedia entry to reflect near-cult status of the 1996 diamond edition.

PS - You tell me what I'm driving in my sig. Is that rare, nation wide? If it is, I knew I should have held on to it. . it was bound to skyrocket in value, damn you alpaca farm investment!

Out of curiosity, when you get a hard top, does BMW provide you with a method to store the hard top safely when not in use, or is that your responsibility to fabricate such a holder, like Jeep people sometimes do in their garage.

I am not sure about BMW directly - but Mercedes and the aftermarket offered a system to help remove and store the hardtop on the old SL

BMW has one.

It's not cheap at all.

And OP I was making a joke at "perches" instead of purchasing. Awesome car though. Would love to own a hardtop.
