Evos and STis understeer like pigs. AWD for the loss.

If you want to even consider having an Evo keep up with an M3 on the turns, you're going to need a badass suspension set up.

However, when it comes to modding, 276hp stock, give it an exhaust, intake and tune and it's pushing more hp than an e46 M3. They're very quick cars in the straight line. The Evo MR's transmission is it's downfall. If you want to pull power (400+hp) you're going to need a much better transmission, they may as well be built out of glass stock.

With that said, they still have 13g tanks, and gas mileage which is worse than that of my 6 cylinder BMW.

What's worth it more? Buy a $20,000 Evo 9 that's been decently maintained (but of course, really beat on), invest about $3,000 worth of performance parts to get you to ~400hp, and end up with a 4-cyl Japanese car with cheap build quality......

Or buying a ~$22,000 E46 M3, roughly the same mileage, not nearly as many problems (plus you don't have to worry about that awful timing belt) and a very quality build, especially interior wise.

Of course when it comes down to it, most of it is preference. Neither car depreciates very quickly, both are highly respected in any racing category, both are extremely good looking cars and both are fun.

Also, something else to keep in mind would be community. The Evo community is very different from the BMW or the M communities.

You are very wrong about whether an EVO can keep up with an E46 M3 or not. Very

In fact here are stock lap times for both the EVO IX and E46 M3 at the Nurburgring. No one said anything about the communities, there are an equal amount of boy racers as there are yuppie douche bags who know nothing. I don't give a crap about communities.

8:11.16 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX Takayuki Kinoshita
8:22 BMW M3 E46 Horst von Saurma

Can't say I'm not surprised. I could have sworn I read something about Evos understeering, maybe it was the Evo8? But I don't think there's a big difference between the 8 and 9 aside from the MIVEC.
Unless if I'm confusing the Evo with the STi.

And I really beg to differ. Although community may not appear to be of your concern (if it isn't, then why are you on e46f?), the STi and Evo owners I know, tend to remind me of the rice-boys I see in Civics.
I only know of one person, who happens to be a friend, who's actually used one of those car's motors to a real potential and built an 800hp STi. Otherwise people slap on an exhaust and tune and think they're gods of the street.

Also, although your time slips may say differently, I found this thread that's worth a read:

Been wanting to post this for a while. As you can see it belongs to the "ghetto boyz"
Wish I could've gotten a front shot.
Front window is limo tint. Rear is silver tint. Naturally on only the drivers side.

It can be saved.. Get rid of the badges, side vents, ugly wheels, stickers, rear bumper, and exhaust and you have yourself a pretty decent looking car
