I would encourage you youngsters to get an M1 Garand from the CMP before they are gone forever.

It is one hell of a fine rifle.

That is a beautiful rifle!

I've been trying to find a CMP Club in my area but all of them are prohibitively expensive or are closed to new members. Ridiculous!

Pretty sure it goes 10 yards, 25 yards, then 50 for the back row. That's a Springfield TRP full rail.

Yeah I've been meaning to get a Garand for a while. I'd like to get a legit nice one (Springfield, high grade), but I'm having a little difficulty

The best way to get a correct Springfield right now is by going with a Service grade special. Go to this page and look for RM1SASSP.

This is basically collector grade, all correct metal, with a reproduction stock. This puts you about 90% of the way there, then you just find a correct 1/2" DAS stock for it.

I think these came to the CMP basically as unissued rifles, metal basically still brand new, but without stocks. So the CMP put their own new production stocks on them and sells them as service grade specials. They are a simple DAS stock away from being 100% correct.

This is mine, I have the correct stock but have not put it on yet, I'm still admiring the CMP walnut. It still has the cosmoline inside the receiver.

In the past you could just order a straight up 100% correct SA from the CMP, but since that is no longer available, this is the only way. These won't be around long either.

^ Wow, price is right too. What are the requirements for cmp again?

Be a member of a verified and approved gun club.

Participate in a live fire training class and get the appropriate signatures from said gun club.

The affiliated club most people join is:http://www.thegca.org/

25 bucks and you're done.

As far as training, there are lots of options. I did hunters education when I was like 13 which qualified. A conceal carry permit would qualify. See this page for the full requirements. It's not too hard.

Oh and heres a photo, since it's the photo thread. My last AR build:

Anyone who want's to discuss this feel free to IM me, or you could visit the CMP forums.

Ahhh, good to know on The GCA. I'll go ahead and do that. I took a hunting safety class (18 hours) but there was no live fire training. I did take a firearms safety course some years back that should qualify.

Oh, and since we need to have pictures

I take it the NRA isn't one such club?

I need to see if I can find my certificates of completion for my courses...I've taken several that qualify

Nope, NRA won't do it. GCA is cheap enough though, all you need to do is join, print your confirmation email, and include it with your order.

ETA - You can use this link to search for affiliated clubs if you prefer something else.

I got some surplus 30 cal in today, and as I was counting it out this photo presented itself to me. Don't laugh too hard, it's a sickness.

One of the few guns where you can actually use the term "clip" and be accurate, lol.

I've been thinking about getting a CMP Garand lately. I cleaned all of the Garands for the local American Legion honor guard, and got the itch to get one for myself. No real reason aside from just getting one.

I'm working on it this week...I've been aching for one for ages. I also have no particular reason, other than that they are awesome battle rifles with a huge amount of history

The best reason to own one really becomes apparent only after you do. They are American history in tangible form. When you pick up a Garand it just feels a little different. I own Ar's, precision rifles, shotguns, and everything else, but when I pick up the M1 I feel a certain responsibility, as a caretaker really, to make sure this piece of American history makes it to the next generation unharmed. I think about the beaches of France, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, etc, and how these boys lugged their M1's literally all over the Earth in defense of not only their own country, but others.

Not to mention, shooting it will put a HUGE smile on your face. The fun factor of the M1 blows away everything else I own as far as shooting.

Sorry for getting sentimental on you, but I just have a lot of respect for these men and their rifles.

I'm considering doing the same thing.
