Please help with suspension suggestions!

I have 109,000 miles on my '01 330i and I would like to refresh the sport suspension as well as the control arms and bushings.

Here's where my question comes in though: I've driven an e90(2009) 335i with sport package and I have to say that it's suspension is amazing.

Maybe my suspension is just old and tired but does anyone know what kind of suspension is being used on that car? Also, what would give me a ride comparable to that? It's nice and stiff but not ridiculous where it's annoying.

Would going with the OEM Sachs shocks reproduce this feeling or am I looking at something like Koni Yellows?

I believe the OEM Sachs sport shocks would be just fine for what you are looking for. If you want a slight edge go for the Konis!!

Thanks for your response! Are the Koni Yellows worth the major price difference over OEM Sachs? Also, should I change out my springs as well or barring any visual damage are they just fine?

No problem, if you like to autocross or track your car, yes they are worth the difference. But if you are just daily driving with some spirited driving, I would say the Sachs are good to go. Like you said with the springs, just visually inspect them, they are probably fine. BUT, if your gonna track or autocross, I would go with some H&Rs.

Great! Thanks for your help! It's just daily driving with some spirited driving here and there for me. I think I'm going to go with the OEM Sachs. I hope I feel a noticeable difference after replacing suspension components. I'm very sure nothing suspension related has ever been replaced.

I suggest getting OEM ZHP stuff to replace your old.

Get ZHP control arms, ZHP shocks and you WILL feel the difference. Control arm bushings are the same with all E46 so dont worry about that.

Here is a link for control arms, its expensive but its worth it. http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...catalogid=4462

Thanks for the suggestion! I have been looking for the ZHP shocks and missed out on the amazing deal when the whole set was only $500 Is there really a difference between them and the normal sport suspension?

Yes there is a difference. ZHP shocks are superb to the sport pack shocks, especially the early ones like you have.

OEM ZHP suspension is by far the best ride Ive driven on, smooth but stable and sporty at the same time.

Thanks again! Do you know where I can even buy the shocks/struts? I can't seem to find them from any vendor at all. I went to bavauto.com and they had the same exact sport shocks(same part #'s) for my year and the 2004 330i.

Depends on how much you want to spend, but what I did is get a set of coilovers and then re-do all the bushings I could. I went with KW V2's, but there is a lesser expensive option that's made by KW called ST coilovers. I also did my FCABs, tranny mounts, as well as RTABs to ensure that nothing on the car was brittle or worn out.

Thanks for your help, but I really would like to use a set of shocks/springs instead of going with coilovers.

well it's a different engineered car, not gonna feel the same

you sure your 330i has the Sport suspension?

i'd go Koni Sports, and Meyle HD control arms and cab's

if springs are Sport and good stay with them. otherwise I'd go with H&R (or Eibach).

Thanks for your help Alex323Ci. I am 100% positive my car has the sports suspension as it started to come standard on all 330i's manufactured after 4/01.

I really cannot find anyone selling the ZHP kit anymore I might just go with the H+R touring cup kit.

I second Alex323ci. I'd go with Meyle HD control arms (for pure cost reasons) they feature all metal ball joints and come with the bushings pressed on. Order from oembimmerparts.com for the best prices on those. BMAparts might be equal. Check. Then you could order ZHP shocks/struts and pair them with H&R OE sport springs.

If you poke around, you can find people selling ZHP shocks. i saw a local CL ad not too long ago where someone was selling ZHP hardware (new).

I am thinking of putting on suspension technique coilovers and selling my H&R/bilstein. but for now, my setup is fine. i like it. Although i'd say my front is a tad lower than i'd like. and thats with reinforcement plates (i also suggest you get these). Also don't forget new strut bearings. Get OEM lemforder though. Do not get Meyles. The bolts are too short and you wont be able to fit a strut bar on it one day.

Thanks for your help E46Mango! It would be awesome if I could actually find the ZHP shocks/struts. No one is selling them, just the regular sport shocks/struts.

I think I might actually go with the H+R touring cup kit plus any additional hardware I might need.

I also second Alex323ci, the meyle control arms and bushing give you a nice ride for a great price, they are just slightly stiffer than oem lemforder. And i agree with e46Mango, only control arms and bushings should be replaced my meyle because it is heavy duty, most other meyle products dont have th HD stamp
