Quantum Levitation & Magnetic Locking [Video]

I would have put this in the science thread but it deserves its own thread. The first 30 seconds are unreal

Yes, the first 30 seconds literally are not happening. Ignore them completely.

My science is raging so hard right now.

So this is working on a quantum level on EM fields? Just imagine if you could do that to non magnetized materials...

It has something to do with the Meissner effect, but I still don't quite understand how it gets locked in place. That really blows my mind

Amazing!

Just think if they could make shoes out of this material. How much faster could we get our wives into the kitchen!

We did something like this in chemistry class. It didn't lock but it floated like this. No idea how it works, but it's fun to watch.

We watched this video in physics today then tried it ourselves, so cool!

I'm sure some of you understand it better but this is all new to me.
If you want to try it yourselves on a smaller scale:
Drop a superconductor into a shallow dish of liquid nitrogen. Once it reaches thermal equilibrium, place a small magnet over the superconductor and the magnet levitates just like in the video. I was using a tiny cube magnet and I spent most of the class watching it spin lol

Another neat video
