i'm about 3/4 down my first bottle of laphroaig. if the difference in flavor between that and a scotch like JW is what they refer to as "peatiness", then i like this peatiness a lot

i may invest in whiskey stones at some point. i like it chilled (i'm not man enough to take it at room temperature), but i hate that ice melts and dilutes the liquor

there are all sorts of arguments for and against putting a cube or two in scotch. some say it allows other flavors to be sensed, others say it just dilutes it.

i like trying it with and without because it does make a good difference in some cases.

a few drops of warm water will allow for the scotch to open up a bit, not a "cube or two." Thats way too much, and will dilute it.

Honestly for me, it all depends on the setting. If it is a crappy scotch, i'll cut it with ice and club. If it is a good scotch, sometimes i'll throw a nice sized ice cube in it (just one) and call it a day. If not, i'll drink it neat. I know what the scotch tastes like, i'm not going to blow sand out my v-hole because of a little dilution...

so i bought the macallan 12 and its really really great. The only thing is that I just moved to chicago and these people here charge like 15% in taxes for alcohol so I cant spend $60 all the time for a 750 ml bottle that with a friend will last me a night. Do you guys recommend something similar, smooth, for cheaper for normal drinking? I dont work, and im a student so I have to save as much as possible lol.. if not i would get the macallan all the time

Damn, a bottle of Mac in one night for 2 people? I sip a lot slower than that.

I had some JW Black tonight with a Fuente Fuente Opus X....

it was divine.

$60 is a bargain. That same bottle is $98 in Ontario

Try the McLelland Highland - I tried it based on a recommendation here, and while it's no Macallan, it is a fantastic scotch for the money.
