I have had an issue in the past with my fuel gauge not registering an empty tank so I am assuming it is a fuel pump issue. I just wanted to thank you for the info and find out if anyone knows of something stupid I may have done that is causing this. My car has 130,000 miles so all of the plastic parts are engineered to fail by now.
Any news on the source of the coolant leak?

Intake camshaft position sensor can cause car to die. Mine died at 127,000 miles. Are you getting codes (SES light)?

Please help diagnose this oil leak

Here is an attached picture. I just changed the valve gasket today since I suspected it was the first place. However, I think there is still some leakage at the place where I denoted the "X" in the picture.

Where do you think the 2nd picture leakage is from?

All pictures taken from FRONT of engine.

Great thread!

Something to add, windshield washer pump and grommet are big failure items.

looks like possibly the valve cover gasket, or the o'ring on the exhaust cam sensor.

Is it in any way useful to have 530 pages long of people saying they washed their car stickied? As if anyone new is going to read 10 hrs of people washing their car or changing their oil post.
Is something like that an important thread for E46Fanatics to know or learn from or gather information?

Hey E46 Guru's has anyone seen this before? Is this the rear differential leaking? I had a few drops of oil on the garage floor and found this.

ah i see you have the 3.64 automatic diff. it could be dripping from the vent hole at the top and drip down that one fin and over to the left and down. but...
the vent hole is more over to the right, but it could slosh over there. the other thing i noticed is that some of that splash is infront. the flow of air would not push it forward on the cover. so it appears from the photos that it might be something else other than the diff oil. but if there is a leak on one of the cover bolts it very well could leak on the top left. try to look higher up. here is a photo of the finned diff cover for reference on the vent tube.

Yes, possibly looks like the vent. Weird that it is that light brown color though.

Thanks for the replies guys. So school me on the rear 3.64 finned diff. Is it because my 330 is a ZHP? To drain and fill the diff both plugs are in that cover correct? Should I replace the cover gasket also?

Yes that diff ratio is from the Z4. I think this is the reason it's the only non-m E46 to get that cover with the diff. But it's the same diff size/shape as all 6 cylinder E46s. There is the one fill plug on the cover, the drain plug is bottom right side.
Don't jump to thinking that is a leak. Diff fluid is oil, and i can't see why it would dry like that. it's oil. I would look real closely underneath with a flashlight. Touch and see if it's dry or still oil that has stuff on it. I would clean it and see if it comes back.
It wouldn't be a bad thing to check the level of oil in diff either.

My theory is this...

At night, when it gets cold and windy...or just windy, the squirrels that made a nest above your diff go to the edge and, uh, poop.

One got a hold of a bad acorn recently, I think. Perhaps chipmunks, or the tiny Nevadan Sasquatch.

I think it's so weird what color that is also and thus am thinking poop...unless that's residue from some prior repair (did you have subframe work done on the car? Ever seen foam filling around the shock towers? Maybe residue from poorly mixed epoxy.

In any case, clean it up with some engine degreaser. In part, figuring out what dissolves it might you figure out what it is.

If it comes off with just water, it's not diff oil. In any case, I'd get new crush washers and at least check the fluid level--remember even if refilling, open up the fill plug first.

I have the same leak in that location. It doesn't look like VANOS since it's not in the same location. Is it a valve cover gasket problem? Just want to be sure before fixing it.
