Differential rear cover gasket leak?

I'm finding oil drips where this is joined. Is this the differential rear cover gasket leaking? If so, is it a DIY or do I need to take it to the garage? Thanks!

You ever figure this out? I replaced my expansion tank six months ago and now I've got a leak up top like yours. (I may have overfilled the system.)

I replaced my Expansion Tank about two years ago and assume its not that leaking again.
Its possible but looks like the radiator to me. The leak is a lil to high to be the ET.
I bought a new radiator and other parts and will do it on my Xmas time off from work.
I may sell the other new parts (ET, ET mount bracket, thermostat etc.) if my old ones are
still in good shape when removed and inspected.

Radiator. The plastic cracks on the radiator near where the upper hose connects. Happened on mine.

Well....my task worked out ok. The lower hose was a real pain to get loose from the radiator spout.
Had to maneuver it all around to get it out with it still installed on the radiator. Geez!!!
But the rest went pretty smoothly. No leaks now. WooHoo!!!!

Oil keeps gathering beside that bolt on the far right of the top of the engine:

Great thread.....

Took care of some leaks on the 530i

Replaced power steering reservoir and hoses, oil filter housing gasket, valve cover gasket, oil level sensor, oil change and did a full Besian vanos overhaul!

Thanks 330ciandr6 for this post. I am a new e46 owner and the "surprise" that my used purchase had in for me was a bad oil leak that started shortly after my first oil change.... makes me wonder what the previous owner did to it to hide the problem.. (scary)
Anyway, thanks to this post, I was quickly able to diagnose the leak as an oil filter housing assembly gasket that was shot, and a couple of hours and $5.97 and I am back in business.
My first BMW, even though I have been wanting one for, well... before most of you were born. I love it and it drives better than I ever imagined. Somehow I have driven 28 year without a speeding ticket. This car may change that.
My other car is on the opposite of the spectrum - a 1974 Jeep CJ-5 that drives like a tank... maybe that's why I don't have any speeding tickets.

I'll work on it, but I don't think I can edit the original post anymore.

While not technically an "oil" leak I will still cover these as they leak horribly. Some people stop the leaks by just replacing the clamps if the hoses are in ok condition while some people replace the hoses. Which you do is up to you. If your reservior is also covered in residue. Replace the cap o-ring.

This is what the reservior looks like with a leaking cap o-ring:

Part numbers needed:
If just doing clamps: 07-12-9-952-109 (qty 2)
If doing hoses:
If built before 9/01 32-41-1-095-526 and 32-41-6-796-390 along with clamps above.
If built after 9/01 32-41-6-750-155 and 32-41-6-796-390 along with clamps above.
Cap o-ring: 32-41-1-128-333
OK.. i changed the O-ring and the leak from the top is gone but the bottom still has it?

if i changed the clamps, what clamps would you recommend? can i get one one from autozone or nearby oreilly's? or last resort is changed the hose and reservoir but how do i remove the hose from the radiator?

Yes, if the hoses are ok, and you just want to replace the clamps, just get some screw type clamps.

Hoses at the radiator have quick disconnect fittings.

330ciandr6... THANK YOU for taking the time to do all the work for this post! My 2002 325Xi has 107k miles on it now. It mysteriously started using about a quart of oil every 1500 - 2000 miles at just under the 100k mile mark. I have no drips in the driveway so I thought it might be burning oil... Though I never see it smoke. I changed the oil today and took the bottom trays off. I found out where my oil has been going! The funny thing is, it must be blowing all the oil out while I drive as it never drips in the driveway! Anyway, I will assume that it is the OFHG. I planned on doing a complete cooling system rebuild soon and have the parts in the garage... New radiator, Stewart water pump, hoses, idler pulleys, etc... I figured I would just plan on making it a two day project (if needed) and replace everything... The cooling system, CCV, CCV hoses, Disa Valve clean-up and new O-ring, etc. I'll clean the ISV too while I am there.

Your post made it easy to get all the part numbers and order all the "while I am in there" stuff. Thanks again... Awesome post!

Exclamation coolant troubles!!!

Okay so recently, I have noticed my coolant levels dropping rapidly. I had white smoke come out of my exhaust, but it was only once and then never again. My oil also looks kind of milky. Today when I got home, there was smoke coming out of my grill and coolant pouring out from underneath. I thought it was a blown head gasket, but my power had not diminished and the coolant didn't come out right away. I put coolant in about 3 days ago and now it started pouring out. I've looked on this forum and haven't found anything like this. I hope it's not serious!
