Michael Schumacher in a coma after skiing accident.

(CNN) -- Michael Schumacher, the most successful driver in Formula 1 history, is in critical condition after suffering "severe head trauma" in a skiing accident in the French Alps on Sunday, hospital officials said.

The 44-year-old German, who retired from the elite motorsport for the second and final time in 2012, fell and hit his head on a rock, said the director of the Meribel resort where Schumacher was skiing.

Schumacher was in a coma when he arrived at the University Hospital Center of Grenoble and required immediate brain surgery, hospital officials said in a written statement.

Oh snap.

Lots of unconfirmed info. Hope he's not too seriously injured.

This news is difficult to understand. (Weak concussion pun intended).

Hope he recovers, I was a massive fanboy back in the day.

Of all the risky maneuvers this guy has pulled. It's skiing that got him.

Dang that sucks. I wonder if he wore a helmet? I always wear mine, even though I think I look like a dumb ass wearing one. Especially if I'm going to be riding in the trees.

Report says that he was wearing a helmet and was conscious when he was transported.

Come on Michael...get out of it!

A big fan here too...been watching F1 for maybe 50 years; seriously dedicated for 30 of them. Come on Schumi. Get better soon!

Re: Michael Schumacher in a coma after skiing accident.

I just got home from skiing for a week. I'm not exactly the safest either, I wear a helmet but I like to ride the sides and when I see what looks like a jump I go over it. Only crashed once though, hit a tree on the other side of a little jump. Deflected myself with a pole kind of so it wasn't really head on.
Hoping he recovers well
