My auto 01 325xi stalls

From time to time (once or twice a week) my car will stall after i turn it on. An instance happened when i would start backing out of a spot, and all of a sudden my car stalls I cant find out what the problem is because no codes have popped up after this instance happens. I've read on the forums that it could be the maf sensor (cleaned it), or the crank sensor. But if it was either of those wouldnt i get a code? what else could the problem be? thanks in advance

theres no lights on the dash and i hooked it up to a scanner and nothing shows up...and my car stalls after it has warmed up already and during mid day. (its about 55-60 degrees in Bloomfield,NJ)

You may take all replies as speculation. The lack of codes does point to a stalling problem I experienced. Right after purchasing the car, mine would flat stall to death requiring a restart at intermittent times. It happened at least five times over a couple months. This always occurred when at operating temp., not necessarily mornings. No codes to be had, nothing.

Reading here, I guessed it may be the drivers side, Intake Cam Position sensor. I ordered an OEM replacement and read up on the install. I had it handy when the car pulled its trick for the sixth time where it finally through a P0 code pointing at the intake sensor. Swapped the sensor and have had no issue since (two years). I suspect the car was such a deal because the seller was scared it was a major problem and unloaded it. I think the sensor may drop the critical output pulse so quickly the car stalls without time to register (write) the code. When the last, and only registered code hit mine, the car stumbled transitioning the throttle on a hill and then stalled to death.

In general purchase OEM sensors only. It's not unusual to see failures around 70K.

The intake camshaft position sensor got me too but I was lucky enough to have a code pointing to it. I went 700 miles into a trip when it started acting up. Then the car needed to be restarted many times just to get it a couple of miles down the road to where I was staying. Next day, I drove it 700 miles home, WITHOUT issue! What luck! Next day while I was running errands back near home, it happened again but I was able to get it home after about 30 starts. I replaced the ICS and my car works fine again. A couple of weeks later I replaced the Exhaust sensor even though it had not *yet* indicated a problem. A bad exhaust sensor isn't as disruptive to your car's performance, as I understand.

It's a relatively easy DIY. Pay the few extra bucks and buy the BMW OEM component -- about $112. You'll also need the green o-ring for $1 and the allen-head bolt since it's really supposed to be a one-use bolt. Don't forget the black o-ring on the VANOS. It's about $1 too.

There's a DIY here in e46fanatics that will show you how.

After saying all that, let me tell you that I'm guessing because you have no codes...and I don't know your mileage or anything else about your car. Mine died at 122k miles and my experience was similar.

Get the codes read for free at an auto parts store...I had to replace (easily) the camshaft position sensors. They weren't cheap... But not terribly expensive. Mine still stalls VERY rarely at idle at stoplights. I'll clean the ICV and MAF the next warm day and see from there.

Mine every morning was wanting to stall/ by loosing power... i would had to turn it back on.... i would do every warm up morning.. either after leaving home or at a stop LIGHT/ or right at Warm up...

Fuel Filter was new...

But FUEL PUMP NOT... couple weeks pass-> driving 60+ on a highway turn w 55-miles of gas left 'CAR SUDDENLY DIES"

try start... cranks but no fire up... obviously gas problem.... put 1 gallon... and it fired right back up..

i went and got FUEL PUMP, because it went died on me... i have thread on it...

maybe your Fuel pump? i say because my has stop w the stalls.... on mornings

check fuel pressure? Just Saying* Good luck
