(Or a screen at a time if you use the remote control [which has to be held less than an inch in front of the receiving eye]). Either way it's slow to respond each time and the whole process is not at all practical whilst driving. When parked up, it's OK when you want something on the first few pages, not on page 100.

I should stress that's on the D90. This new D99 has a different interface. I expect it will be better, possibly much better, but I'm still not expecting it to suit a large library like mine.
Would it be ok to assume that playlist creation and play would run considerably more smoothly than navigating through artists or albums?

Yes, pre-defined playlists work fine on the D90.

They don't suit me though. I'd have to remove the iPod from the car, fire up iTunes at home, define a playlist, sync the iPod and put it back in the car. I'd have to know in advance what I'm going to want to listen to. Which defeats the point of having the whole library with me.

I get around it by using a line-out dock on the iPod and connecting it to the Dynavin's aux-in. I then use the 'Pod's own screen to browse and select (I can no longer control the 'Pod from the Dynavin at all).

That would be fine if I didn't have an external DAB tuner that I also use with the Dynavin's aux-in. That's why I'm looking to rationalise my library and use a SD card when I get a (Android) D99.

yes they have ipod resume.

Also "elfer's" advice is good, for those with an android unit, dont use an ipod, put everything on a big SD card and use the android music player or the music app of your choice.

I presume though if you use the Android side for music you don't get the ability to play or control music when using Nav?

Sure you can listen to music and use the nav app, its just like android on a phone, it will multitask. Actually it usually works a little better sometimes (depends on the app) as the android OS and the app will decide what nav audio to overlay and when to do it, most apps do it in a fairly seamless way.

The only downside is if you get too much going on you can start to tax the processor and the music will start to cut out.

Interesting!

What about changing track when using Nav? I assume steering controls won't work on Android music apps?

This is dimensions of that other GPS DVD player:
W: 176 mm H: 100 mm D: 160 mm (with front panel: 185 mm)
Is it fit in E46?

Hmmmm whats the deal with the iPod charging? From what I can read it only charges the iPod in iPod mode, which is fair enough, but it doesnt seem to shut the ipod off either.

Are we saying that when you use the ipod mode it'll then subsequently result in the battery in the ipod going completely flat? Surely I wont need to manually power down the iPod each time I use it?

thats old news, it applied to one model of older ipods ("ipod video" from around 4-5 years ago) that appear to work differently than all the other ipods and would not shut down correctly, they would stay on and run their batteries down. Ive never seen that behavior on any other kind of ipod.

I dont know if this is still the case with the newer dynavins as I havent heard about it in a while.

That sounds pretty reassuring Jeff, thanks.

I currently run an Intravee with the BMW MID display. My ipod lives in the boot and I touch it once every 2 months to change the music on it, the rest of the time it's just sitting there in the car. This is how I'd like the Dynavin to work. That said I do have a feeling mine is a 4th gen iPod video - but it shuts down correctly with the Intravee.

Mate, they are both specifically for the E46 so of course they will fit but this thread is for the Dynavin not other units.

And Jeff, you must get dejavu on a daily basis now

Oddly, on this video of the older Dynavin D90 units, the USB music interface matched the radio interface and actually looks quite nice - nicer than the current USB interface. What happened? (Swap to 7 minutes).

Nothing odd about it, different firmware different UI, that's the original Dynavin UI which in my opinion had the best UI until they changed it from the V5 onwards.
You can see and read about it in Jeff's original Dynavin thread here.......http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=754606
And no, you can't change the current Dynavin UI to look like the old one, it's different hardware and software altogether.

Well usually when companies release newer firmware they tend to improve the UI rather than change it for the worse, hence it being a tad odd :p The UI for the USB interface seems so slick there. If they could do it back in 2010 why can they not do it now? Seems like a bit of a backwards step. A shame really.

It's all subjective really, for every person that liked the old UI you'll find another that hated it which is what happened way back at the start of the Dynavin craze.
Can't please all the people all the time.
