I'll never touch another redline product...general consensus is that the redline oils are good initially but they quickly degrade. IMO put the OEM BMW recommended gear oil in the transmission and the OS Giken Recommended oil in the rear.

Where's this general cons from ?
Been using redline tranny oil since 2008 and still feelt like new when i tore down the tranny earlier this year. havent done any chemical tests but it looked(slighlt more brown) and smelled(urgh) just like it did going in.

I've only heard that royal purple disintegrates early. i use redline in my diff and tranny and its been in there for almost a year and i have only had success with it. i drained and inspected at about 20k miles and it looked red like it was going in but i saw a lot of little flakes here and there which I'm sure it cleaned out the tranny of any parts. i put new fluid in and checked it very recently and saw no flakes so i believe it cleaned out my tranny good...

unfortunetly i didn't notice my tranny getting any smoother but it certanetly didn't change from having the old oem fluid in it just cleaned it out..

btw i used mtl

Transmission fluid is Royal Purple MTF. Royal purple does disintegrates easily. I wouldn't recommend it. I have to change it every 15,000 miles to keep it smooth. I will go with Redline next probably.

For your OS Giken differential, you NEED to use the OS Giken approved fluid in order to maintain performance, reliability and warranty if you still have one. It is a 80w-250. You can get it at Turner Motorsports for about $50. You will need 2 quarts, although you will barely use the second quart.

Curious how often you were changing the fluid in it. I've had mine in the car for probably 2000-2500 miles.

there is an initial fluid change on the giken...dont remember the mileage(1000 pops in my head but im not 100%), but i remember HPF telling me once driven for X amount of miles change out the fluid, i think after that its every 10-15k.

My vendor recommended break in fluid for about 500 miles, and after that he specified that I should just come in and get the oil analyzed to see if it needed changing due to the fact that it was expensive oil. Back then, it was $100 a quart. Now it is $50 so I might just change it myself soon. I'm around 15,000 on this set.

NO, do not use any diff oil made for limited slip differentials (have FMs) and do not use any friction modifiers for the OSgiken.

edit: scratch that, misunderstood osgiken. They said do not use any FM but meant do not use ADDITIONAL modifiers with oil already made for lsd (with modifiers) (obviously). Also said oil that is not specifically for LSDs is fine as well.

Just had my tranny changed at 70K with Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle Transmission Oil. Required just over 7 qtrs @ $5.89/qtr at AutoZone. Will change it again every 30K. http://www.castrol.com/castrol/secti...tentId=7028224

Changed my Diff and Trans with Royal Purple. Since I have an SMG its absolutely amazing the difference the trans makes after a fresh oil change.

Expound (present and explain a theory or idea systematically and in detail) please.

Also, Why RP instead of Redline which seems to be a much more popular choice?

What stage clutch do you have? Any chatter before or after SMG tranny oil change?
