Oil light indicator

MY OIL LIGHT COMES ON IN THE MORNING WHEN I START MY CAR. WHEN THE LIGHT IS ON MY CAR RUNS ROUGH UNTIL THE LIGHT GOES OFF. THEN MY CAR RUNS FINE. WHAT COULD THE CAUSE OF THIS BE. OIL PUMP. CAMS OR VANOS. JUST CHANGED THE OIL AND FILTERS..??????

what color?
red = low oil pressure, stop the engine immediately.
yellow after starting up engine, faulty oil level sensor.
yellow after shutting down engine, low oil level.

How does this affect the engine? Would it make the engine run rough?

Modern BMW engines rely on oil pressure for several things including the valve "lifters." That's why we don't have to adjust the valves (what PIA that was). Also, the VANOS system relies upon oil pressure to work.

you havent answered my question yet.
is it red or yellow?

if yellow, replace the sensor next time you change oil and meanwhile keep an eye on your oil level.

Once you start your car, about 5sec later; the oil light comes on (yellow) and then it disappear. I have that too, this has to do with your oil leveling sensor (12617508003).

My oil light sensor has shown up recently but it seems completely random. It'll show up once in a while after some casual driving (back and forth to work ~5-10mins) random times after some aggressive driving (~20-30 mins or so, around town). Mostly after I shut it off, but not all the time...anyone have an idea? Yellow is the only color I've seen it show up in.

Thankyou for all the replies. My light is yellow after startup. Engine runs rough until light turns off. Ok. Oil level sensor may seem to need replaced, but why would my engine run rough??

means you have other problems.
my 330xi first time starting the engine cold it would shake for a couple seconds then smooth out after.
its an old car, dont expect it to run smooth as silk.

Oil level sensor needs replacing... and it sounds like the rough idle may be attributed to the worn out vanos seals if they havent been replaced... whats your current mileage on the vehicle...? Does the vehicle idle rough any other times... or seem bogged down below 3k rpms...? another sign of vanos...

I was getting a yellow after shutting the engine down. Just yesterday I replaced the oil level sensor and of course replaced the oil to the proper level. Drove 4 times and no yellow light. On the 5th time, I shut the engine down and the light came on. Any other ideas? This happens intermittently under different driving conditions.

Thanks.

I've been driving my 2003 325i sedan some more. Seems that the light is coming on when when the temperatures outside are colder rather than during the day and warm. Makes me think there is an bad electrical connection. Any other ideas?

I am having the same problem, my yellow comes on after driving 400 miles, I know synthetic oil burns, but this seems a little crazy. Could it be the oil level sensor? If the oil is low, is this normal for the engine to burn oil like this?

I just changed the sensor. I know my oil is not low. It only happens when it is less than 40-50 degrees F.
