This is in response to the question asked about how a subwoofer can be heard in the cabin when the sub is faced towards the rear of the car:
The subwoofer produces a sound wave. As you know, a sound wave expands as it travels forward. The peak of the wave is when you get the best sound. The space in the trunk is inadequate for the subwoofer's wave to reach it's peak, however the sound wave does reflect off the wall in the trunk. Everytime a soundwave bounces off a wall, it increased by about 3 db. When it deflects off the wall in your trunk, the sound wave will be traveling towards the front of the car and it'll peak around there. The reason why it's important to dynamat the trunk is because you don't want those sound waves flying everywhere. |

I live in gaithersburg MD. I've built a bunch of sub boxes and we could work together on yours if you want... I'd charge you $150 and you bring all the wood/carpet/adhesive. We could make it look pretty good. If you're looking to have it professionally installed, I'd HIGHLY suggest going to AV Art which is also in Gaithersburg MD next to Montgomery Air Park. A small shop that does great work. They just moved from Rockville to Gaithersburg. Contact Steve Gelb at AV Art (301) 340 1096 and tell him Chris w/ the custom computer sent you

What's all this talk about three figure quotes? I haven't heard of anyone paying more than $55 for a custom box at the local car audio store (oh, and I'm talking about high quality work here).

It's more than $55 in wood/supplies! A box takes about 2square yards of carpet... thats already $17!! Spray aheadsive, screws, caulk, and WOOD

Weird. I wonder how they do it for so cheap?? I honestly didn't even know a regualr wood box would be that as much as what you guys are spending. A couple weeks ago I was quoted $47 for a box that occupies two 10" Alpine subs. Btw, I'm not trying to take anything away from you. I'm sure the cost is justified. |

I'll be getting with you in about two weeks if that's cool with you? I've got a box with two 12' Polk GNX already hooked up (wires, etc.) I had it in my galant and with fold down seats it hit...No such luck in the "Alcatraz tight" Bimmer trunk! I'll PM you to see when or if your're free, so you can tell me what to bring. Thanks!

Do you want to take your old box and cut off the sides (maybe 2 inches on each side) and then put a new wood piece on each end? That would be much much cheaper (we could probably do that for $25)
