Question Should i go to a BMW dealer and get my problems checked out??

I bought a 03 325i about two months ago. I think my computer reads wrong or there is something wrong with my fuel pump/filter because when my computer read 36mi till empty i parked it in my driveway but i didnt start again till i put gas in it. Now whenever im in traffic moving 10mph or less my engine just shuts off right there in traffic then i have to shift to park, turn the car completeky off then start it back up again. In 10 mins of jampacked traffic this has happened 3 times. what could be the problem? How can i get it fixed?

Can be the fuel pump, or the transfer pump in the gas tank. Or even possibly the sensor/gauge itself.

Dealer will rape you, find an indy mechanic if anything.

Could be that you got some dirt in the system when the fuel tank was low. You might just need a new fuel filter. Is the Check Engine light on? If yes, have the codes read so that you know what the problem is. Find a good local independent garage that specializes in BMWs (see BIMRS.ORG). You will pay less at an indy garage than at the dealer.

Regardless of what your issue is anytime you have to ask the question "should I go to a BMW dealer?" the answer is automatically no.

The exception to this rule is if you're buying a car, or buying a really inexpensive part.

Go to an independent BMW shop.

The dealer will simply start replacing a bunch of parts and charge you ridiculous amounts of money for it. It could very possibly even be parts that aren't the cause of the problem.

This happened to me as well. I had to have the fuel pump/sender replaced and I was able to do it myself. It's not that hard since the system is under our back seat. I also did the fuel filter as well for good measure.

Does the problem clear up if you FILL the gas tank?

If yes, then fill the gas tank.

You do not have to put the car into Park to start it. You can start in Neutral.

The fuel pump lives under the back seat, on the right side of the car. If the pump is sucking air because the tank is empty, then replacing the pump won't help very much. It is a very bad practice to drive around with just a couple of gallons of gas in the car. The fuel pump really likes to be fully submersed in fuel because the fuel is a heat sink. If you keep the tank basically empty, then the fuel pump gets very hot, and this shortens its life dramatically. You only bought the car a month ago, so you have not cooked the fuel pump already, but the previous owner may have also driven the car by putting in a gallon a day so he could get down the block and back, and he could have cooked the pump.

If the pump needs to be replaced, then it should give you trouble whether the tank is full or empty.

When you get to 32 miles remaining, you have about 1 gallon remaining. There are two lobes in the gas tank -- one on each side of the driveshaft tunnel -- and if all of the gas is in one lobe, the pump can suck air because it is in the other lobe.

So, fill the gas tank and reset the Trip Meter. Then refill the gas tank when the Trip Meter gets to 300. This will save you an expensive trip to the dealership for an expensive part that you might never have to replace if you stop driving around with an empty gas tank.

The fuel pump itself does not need to be "submersed". Fuel running through it is what cools it down..

Run some Chevron Techron or Seafoam in the gas tank, and fill up with 91 oct. If that does not improve your situation, change your fuel pump and change the filter. Also if you have any stored codes it would be a good idea to get them read and post up here.

Nope don't go to the dealership unless you have Donald Trump money driving Gary Coleman's car!

You are currently in the right place. We can diagnose most e46 issues for free within minutes and a few posts.
