And can it be opened up to solder 7 & 8 or should I buy this little gem as well?

Thanks everyone!!
NO, you must use the BMW scanner dongle for the pa-soft software to interface with car.

Soldering appears correct... are you using the 20 port under the hood and the 20 to 16 pin adapter?? I believe you'll need it for your 2000 E46, if you don't have one you can use a jumper to work around it. See this thread at post #20. http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...hlight=pa+soft

Thanks! I'll give that a try and see if it works. I've been seeing people reporting to use the 20 pin obd but I thought I didn't have one until I found it today haha

Thanks a lot m8, I also have read that they can only be cleared with special BMW Scanners, like the ones they're using at the dealer, GT1 and stuff, but they don't bother me.

Anyway, here is a picture of my unit(not sure if i need to solder or not..):
Got it working. After not thinking about the device for a while, i decided to try to solder together pin 7&8 as i've read some place, and that worked, finally!

Found an error code at DME (171, check fuel supply system). I've cleared it and after 30 kilometers or something it appears again. Any thoughts? Car is been running fine, except for slight idle variation 850 +/- 50-100 rpms. MAF sensor was changed a month ago with a brand new BOSCH.

Anybody knows why my Check engine light doesn't light up at all, except when i do a cluster test?

nicoaraalex - I can't answer your question, but I have a sub question to your issue.

For anyone that knows, when looking at the screenshot from nicoaraalex - how do you translate the codes you see there to the codes index found in the service manual and all over the internet (the Pxxxx codes)

thanks

It's AB [171], on the internet its P0171 or P0170, you just take the DECIMAL (171) number, not the HEX (AB).

I was never able to get mine to work. And I don't want to buy another broken scanner.

But I do want my DRLs turned off real bad.

Are people having better luck with the recent purchases of these?

Got mine recently, the cable from a fellow member (newer style), downloaded the software, and bought the 20 PIN adapter for my car. I did toy with turning the DRLs off on mine, and had no problem with it. Just decided that with my lights, I didn't like not having them on, so I left alone. But didn't seem to have any problem with it .

Well i bought mine about 2 months ago(dx.com), and it didn't work right out of the box, i had to bridge the connection between 7&8, and after that it's been working nicely.

Btw, what is DRL?

I do not think this works this way.

Likely far more complex to translate the PA Soft/BMW Scanner codes to generic OBDII codes.

Not many, it any of the these codes translate to standard OBD codes based on the descriptions PA Soft/BMW Scanner displays.

*OFFICIAL* BMW Diagnostic Scanner PA Soft 1.4 Thread

Got mine in the mail yesterday, installed the software on the laptop (running XP) and that went fine. I plug the scanner into the OBDII port and get "Connection error with IKE". After some searching I found that I need to solder point 7 & 8, so I open the scanner up to find that they came already connected. I've done a ton of searching to come up with no definitive answer. When plugged in I am able to view live data but I can't click on "Car Ident" or get into coding any features. This is so frustrating after waiting over a month to get it and now it isn't working. Please help!!

this is because you use the obd port under the steering. You have to use the 20pin round port under the hood to get access to all modules. Unless you rewire your 16pin obd port to include the missing line.

If it's under 2001 or 2000, you need to connect it to the 20pin connector under the hood.

hmm, you seem to be correct.

pcode p0171 is "P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1) "

So, who is right eventually? 171 Check, fuel supply system, isn't the same with P0171? The description of it might be different.

If its pre 7/2000 you need to connect under the hood, or if you have a 20 pin under the hood at all you need to.
