Gran Turismo 6 announced for 2013 Holiday Season

Gran Turismo 6 announced
Wed, 15 May 2013 2:22 PM

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced Gran Turismo 6, the latest version of PlayStation's best-selling franchise, will be released in the holiday season, 2013. The news was revealed today by Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi at an event held to celebrate 15 years of the top-selling series.

"GT6 for PlayStation 3 will bring new levels of authenticity to 'the Real Driving Simulator' as well as introducing stunning new tracks and cars and a revised user interface," a press statement read.

"A new compact game engine will improve operation and increase the flexibility to expand it with downloadable content."

The game is also set for connectivity with devices such as smartphones and tablets for social and community functions.

All of the cars and tracks from Gran Turismo 5 will be retained in GT6. But notable additions to the line-up of historic cars, road cars and the latest race cars, brings the total car list to 1200 at launch, with new cars set to be continually added online.

Several thousand aerodynamic parts and custom wheels will be available for almost all cars, and players can personalise their own custom cars in-game as well.

The UK's Silverstone Circuit will be one of seven new locations in Gran Turismo 6, taking the total to 33, with 71 different layouts available, 19 of them being new.

New tracks are also set to be made available online, while the course maker has also seen improvements.

The press statement confirmed that the GT Academy series, which sees Nissan and Sony team up to find real racing drivers, will be returning.

Other notable partnerships in the development of GT6 have been with tyre manufacturer Yokohama Rubber and suspension company KW Automotive.

"It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo," explained Kazunori Yamauchi, during the announcement at Silverstone Circuit.

"Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream. We're pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform.

Editor's note: We were informed of an embargo a few minutes after the story was published. The initial press release contained no such warning.

I'll plan to get in line sometime around 2024.

I can't remember the last time I touched GT5..played it for less than a month.

PS4 is suppose to be released during the 2013 holiday season and GT6 is going to PS3?

Can I just say forza is just better? The clutch makes a world of difference. I wish gt5 had a clutch hope this one does

Agreed, got a copy of GT5 for free thanks to an Amazon screw up over a year ago. Have to admit, it has been a bit of a disappointment. Too many menus and too much lag between menus. Feel like I am getting married to it since it takes that much commitment and time to play. Even with allocating a portion of my PS3's HD to the game, it just plays too slow. Even going from race back to the garage then back to race has more lag than I can deal with.

forza is undoubtedly better. the GT series has lost it's way, and it is disappointing.

If you get the G35 wheel, you have a clutch. They just never built it into the controller.

GT4 was amazing because there was nothing like it as in its scale of content. Even GT3 was great.

PGR3 was cool too. Also really good. Forza stepped it up immensely with FM3, then FM4 was just fantastic.

I do hate that Forza refuses to give us the CSL.

This. The thing I find annoying about games like GT is that the further into the game you go, the more time you have to spend staring at the screen going around the track. There is NO need to make a race 10, 15, 25, 100 laps. It's just annoying.

ya i hate endurance races just so i can buy mods. they need to appeal more to casual gamers. i do like the open world feel of need for speed but tracks can be fun too.

I've always been leery of steering wheel controllers for some reason. Do you have the G35? Thoughts on it?

I do agree that there shouldn't be an even 50/50 split. It should be more like 75/25 in favor of a-spec, so there is less b-spec to complete before you finish the game.

Also, I hate how they dropped the accelerated b-spec mode from GT4 to GT5, and the option to complete a designated a-spec race in b-spec mode. That was awesome; allowed for faster completion of the endurance races and I had it timed on my stop watch to come back every few minutes for the pitstop, so I could watch tv or do something else, and come back when I needed to, lol. The ability to decide, hmmm I don't want to do this endurance race in a-spec; i'll get the credit for it but complete it in b-spec accelerated; that would be nice...so you can advance in the game.

completing the endurance races was just such an amazing feeling of achievement, though, so I don't think it should be completely taken away...and the feeling of failure if the PS hung or just got interrupted somehow and you lost all that time you invested in the endurance race....fffffffffffuuuuuuuuuu lol

I got a PS3 because of GT5 and GTA4. So long ago.

EDIT: We all know this will come out in 2023.
