Talking Need an upgrade.. impossible?

Hello,

I want to upgrade my current audio-system to something.. new..
First I was thinking about just pulling out the old BMW Business CD and putting back my Sony (with adapter-cables and facia). Well, it looked like

So I kept on searching. Came across some nice 2DIN-systems. All sites talk about relocating the HVOC. Tough luck for me, I've got the manual airco-thingy. Seems like these are not movable?

FM-transmitters suck by design.

So the only option for me seems to be buying one of those DICE-devices which connect to the CD-changer-cable (unable to check if it is present, but I believe it is. No changer, sadly).

I have:
CAR: 2002 316ti E46 Compact
HU: Alpine, Model CD53, Part Number 65. 12-6 915 711 (Sep 2001)
(too old to support the aux-connector).

Anyone got some advice on 1) if relocating the airco-controls really is impossible (or at least not spending hours and hours) or 2) what to buy? I really like the "OEM-look", but would love to just plug in an USB-stick in stead of changing CD's every 45 to 60 minutes

I read somewhere that the manual controls can easily be swapped for climate.

[Quick search later] Here is one link at least where it's been done:

http://www.e46fanatics.com/forum/sho...t=45694&page=2

And if the manual panels have the same connectors on the back as the climate panels, you should be able to relocate the manual panel as easily as you could a climate panel.

Have you pulled it out and had a look at the back? Are there electrical connections or bowden cables?

So, there I am again. I found out I do have a cdchanger-cable in the trunk so I decided to buy one of those nice cdchanger-to-usb-interfaces. Now all the sellers tell me this will not work with my (stock) alpine-HU because I do not have ibus? Anyone can tell me more about this? Is it correct that my alpine HU does not have ibus? How can I check? Or do E46's not have ibus at all? Also, if I wanted to change my HU, what other manufacturers make CD53's? All I can find on eBay are Alpine and Blaupunkts, but they are not supported.. I'm lost (and I don't have the money for a Dynavin )

Something like this should just work.. right..?

Connections seem the same..

Dude.. You have a compact, drop an S54 in that bitch!!!

The manual control can be swapped for a digital climate unit, which can be moved south to the storage bin location.

Yeah, already did the manual > digital swap, so some double-DIN unit could be installed.. if only it looked a bit OEM. Most are just ugly.. or expensive
Was thinking about EUR 200/250 max..

OK so I went ahead and bought an USB-interface. Connected it to the CD-changer-wires in the trunk and.. nothing. Double-checked wiring, OK. The HU does not seem to recognize the interface Could it be because there was no CD-changer to begin with? Should something be activated in the HU?

I built and programmed a device to simulate the CD changer in my car, same issue. Do I need to pull a battery cable and power-cycle the car for it to work?

Short follow-up on this. Seemed like I was being dumb. Forgot to connect the Red Wire to the 12V.. All is working now
