2013 BMW M5 to get six-speed manual as no-cost option

Rest easy, die-hard enthusiasts. BMW has officially confirmed that the 2013 M5 sedan will be offered with a do-it-yourself six-speed manual transmission here in the United States. When the car arrives Stateside this summer, it will come standard with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission or a row-your-own gearbox as a no-cost option. BMW even goes so far to state that while the manual transmission has one less gear than the DCT, its "ratios have been optimized for acceleration, flexibility and fuel economy." Sounds good to us.

When are you planning to pick one up?

If they really wanted to make people happy they'd knock a couple grand off the price for going with a 6 speed.

If they wanted to make people happy? People should be happy it's even an option considering what happened with the E60.

The E60/has had a 6 speed Granted, it was an afterthought and you couldn't completely disable DSC, but yeah...6 speed.

And it was an utter piece of shit. The E60 was built around the 7-speed SMGIII transmission. Not being able to spin the tires on a 500HP V10 is blasphemy.

BMW enthusiasts should be thankful this time around.

Eh, I love the looks of the E60 better. This body style is too conservative for me.

Thankful that a company responded to its customers' input regarding one of their high-end models.

I <3 my 6 speed e60...

Chevy Sonic is available with a 6 speed gearbox. Purists rejoice.

They should reduce the cost of the car if you're doing 6-speed for obvious reasons.

Only in america you pay extra to have a manual lol, in europe we pay extra for an auto ^^

I guess BMWoA is pushing for FWD aswell...

now that auto's are going to be the norm, and very very few manuals will be made, what makes you think you aren't going to have to pay more?

that goes for most things...

they have to make a certain number of manuals before they can reach breakeven... the lower that number is forecasted, the higher it will cost to reach break even. however this isn't being charged more, you are just paying the same no matter the transmission

Oh wow, thank God. For a minute, I was planning to sell my 323i non sport package and buy an E63 AMG, but since the new M5 comes in a manual, I think I'll go with that.

Doubt the auto will be the "norm" outside of the US in atleast 10 years as we need to be abit more cautios of fuel consumption than you guys(why we dont drive around in bigblock for example)

Gas at $10/gallon along with heavy taxes makes alot of people choose low CO2g/km vehicles , auto trannys add CO2g/km.

"no cost option" meaning that you don't have to pay extra for the transmission on top of the msrp. You would still pay the $3k extra for the DCT if you wanted that. Therefore, it be cheaper to go with the 6-speed? That's what it is for the M3 right now.
