Yeah the sooner you start calling it a magazine the better off you'll be.

My personal rec's would be S&W M&P, a Springfield like JJ suggested, or something simple and from a major manufacture. I would stick to 9mm for now and not stray into the more expensive .40/.45/.380 calibers.

M&Ps are under $500 used all day long, close to $500 new.

Glock 17/19/22/23 (gen3) with 2 mags new can be found for $500.

Last time I checked, M&Ps new are sitting at ~$460-470 new

M&P took their rebate away and just lowered the price on the models

+1 on 9mm as a good starting caliber. You will be able to shoot more for the same money and modern ballistic technology makes it suitable for defense with the right ammo.

If you are just looking for a range gun, you might also want to look at some .22lr pistols. A browning buck mark was my first handgun and still comes to the range almost every trip. Ruger makes great .22 pistols too. I love the idea of the M&P 22 but haven't been able to shoot one yet.

Word of advice though: don't limit your budget to under $500. The difference in cost between most 9mm handguns is only a couple boxes of ammo. Shoot as many as you can, look at more, and buy the one that feels right.

I would check out deals on a springfield XD essentials package as they can be had for just under or around $400. I got mine during the gear up promo and got 5 mags and the gun for 379.99.

I have one that I have done a trigger job and now I shoot it in competitions over my M&P but box stock the M&P is better IMO(but only slightly).

The most important thing I did to my XD is put grip tape on it because the standard one gets a bit slick when your sweaty.

The best shooting gun you can buy under $500 is a CZ75 but its SA/DA and most dont have a decocker(a death wish for a newbie).

My XD9 4" service essentials pkg (case, 2 mags, lock, brush) was $429 in CA a few weeks back. "Normal" price was $469. I think it's gone up since the extra mag promo.

Also, why is not having a decocker on the CZ a death wish? You can't decock an XD (or a glock for that matter) either.

Man, dawg... I slapped a clip in my gat and popped a cap in dat ass.

M&P 9mm gets my vote. It was my first handgun and I don't regret it for a second. I just wish the trigger was like glass.

Roommate just bought a Sig Sauer 9mm yesterday at a gunshow. The Glocks looked nice but felt cheap and light because of the composite material. Really liked the Beretta 9mm...felt good in my hands. Apparently, the military is getting ready to switch from the Beretta as standard issue to the Sig.

Glock 19 is always my vote, and that's actually for any budget. Reliable, accurate, and proven; I love mine.

OP, since you didn't state its intended use (Range work, Carry,...), I'll say the new Ruger SR22 pistol. This .22LR is really getting great reviews, MSRP is $399 & bulk .22LR can be had for .03 cents a round. Most people have been buying these in the $330 to $360 range, and at .03 to .04 cents a round, you can shoot all day for around $10. Virtually every review says the same thing, 1) It's very accurate 2) It eats every manufacturers ammo & doesn't jam.

Good luck in your decision.

Glock 19......best gun you can get for the money.

EDIT: 9mm that is

Just my opinion. Awesome starter gun. Very forgiving, easy to clean, 9mm ammo is cheap so you can get practice at the range. You can find them used all over for well under $400. Get some good ammo for it, nice light...you have a great home defense weapon also.

EDIT AGAIN: Glock 17 is another great choice. You can tell I am a Glock guy.

I thought the Apex kit just made the trigger lighter at the point where it breaks.

I'll look into it some more.

I have a Glock 19, Smith and Wesson Sigma 9mm, and a Kel-tec PF9. I LOVE all three. I love my glock because its so damn reliable. I love the Sigma because I got it new for $350 out the door, many people say they don't like it because of the trigger pull. I like it better than my Glock. My pf9 is just awesome. It's compact, light weight, easily concealable, and it runs best on +P ammo.

You need to ask yourself what you'll be using your pistol for. Home defense, personal carry, just to have one? Do you plan on shooting a lot? If so 9mm is probably your best route. If not 40 or 45 is a good choice. If you like pure stopping power go with the 45 but be warned, 45 ammo is expensive and this includes reloads.

So back to the question at hand. Is $450 a good price for the Glock. Yes and no. How many rounds have been through the gun? Based on having 1 mag and no sights I would say in the range of $375. If it had a low round count, night sights, and 2 mags I'd say that's a reasonable price to ask. Shoot it first before you buy it. Have someone with firearms knowledge inspect it before you purchase it. Or better yet, do your homework and find what you really like. Go to several shops and hold an array of pistols to see which fits best in your hand. Follow up by renting it at a local range.

Feel free to PM me if you've got any questions. Good luck!

Makes the reset stronger too - that's my biggest complaint with the MP series. Keeps it heavy enough to use in a defensive pistol.
