Ultimate Breather Tank
Here is what in my eyes is one of the best catch cans I've seen for e46s. HPF also makes a very nice can. (500) This can will cost you about. (200) I took this idea from PEI. This set up requires a long tube intake. I realized after I made the mounting bracket. I had put a heater under my intake... I'm having some 94% reflective material shipped this week to combat that issue. Enjoy!

Instead of having it as a breather tank, why not route it back to the intake? So long as the catch can has adequate baffles and filters, minimal oil vapors will re-enter the intake track. Vacuum promotes better ring seal as well. Looks good though. Did you make a bracket for it to mount to or use an existing hole there? I ran an open crankcase breather system on my old turbo car so I do know it's effectiveness!
I'm using IMO one of the best bang for your buck cans. Made by 42 Draft Designs. It costs $115 + shipping for the basic can and goes up from there. But this is the basic one: ![]() And to show you the internal baffle/filter to catch oil at the top of the can. ![]() Installed: ![]()

Looks very nice! M3's VC design allow for a lot more options, while still maintaining a clean engine bay. That is a very nice set up! I still hate the idea of having that hot air in my intake! The an fittings/hoses really drive up the price of a can. Thanks for sharing!

I did make a bracket to mount it. This bracket will cost about 4 dollars from home depot. You need to modify it slightly for it to work. I'm more than willing to go into great detail, about how I did it. Ask away! EDIT: BTW you have some very nice pieces in that bay!

At the rate my catch can is filling, I am thinking of using MrPaddleShift's solution that utilizes a BMW motorsport oil separator with a check valve, to drain back to dipstick

Mine is filling up pretty fast. It actually doesn't fill up before the vapors start to blow out the other side though. I just need some baffling in there. I'm now using quart sized containers. But I'm venting out to the atmosphere.
Also, it is impossible to clean out the gunk. I would NEVER use something that I could take completely apart and clean. My lines are even clogging up with gunk.

Anyone else did this install? Looking for ideals. Like to be super clean and not noticeable...

I'm sure I can help make a bracket or something/find a place for that thing. Hell, someone buy mine. I'll order this one and make a mount/location for it.
