That's your power steering fluid and it's pretty common for that to look messy. I wouldn't worry about it unless the level drops.

Every week, you should stop topping it up. Unless of course your car is some kind of a PS oil producing machine. If that's the case, bottle up the oil and open a shop to sell it.

There is an o-ring on the underside of the cap. Clean every surface thouroughly to produce a proper seal again. If the o-ring is missing/deteriorated replace as necessary. If you do this you will not have a mess anymore under normal street driving conditions.

With AutoX or spirited driving some fluid may escape out of the vent but that is normal. What is not normal is any leak/spill under Normal driving conditions

You probably need to replace the o-ring on the top. It may look like there isn't one there, they tend to flatten out, there is a grove the new one fits into.

Sock mod FTW!!!! I believe there is a built in breather hole at the top.....so....you will have a tough time ever keeping oil off the top of the cap....but you can keep the rest of your engine bay clean.

Mine has been leaking for a while. I'll have to add this gasket to my next OEM order. Seems like it leaks and leaks, but still has plenty fluid left in the resvervoir.

There is tiny vent hole that allows seepage of the ATF when there is too much fluid in the reservoir. This happened to me and I turkey basted out a small amount of the fluid. No more mess after.

I also recommend replacing the entire reservoir for high mileage car because there is a PS fluid filter integrated into the reservoir. BMW doesn't sell the filter seperately. I am sure you can ghetto rig one yourself if you want to save a few bucks.
