First BMW M Performance Autos Released - M550d xDrive, X5 M50d & X6 M50d

First BMW M Performance Autos Released - M550d xDrive, X5 M50d & X6 M50d

BMW M Performance Automobiles is the newest off shoot from BMW's M Division. BMW M's main products are the 100% M models such as the 1M, M3 and M5. BMW M Performance Automobiles blur the line between Non-M and M cars. The new offering is being launched in Germany with four newly developed models. These cars come with a significant boost in performance and hallmark M precision in the interplay of the power train, chassis and aerodynamics - coupled with unrestricted everyday utility and high levels of efficiency.

The BMW M550d xDrive, BMW M550d xDrive Touring, BMW X5 M50d and BMW X6 M50d models will have their world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show (8 - 18 March 2012). The market launch of the BMW M Performance Automobiles starts just a few weeks later. The BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring models will be available in German showrooms from 12 May 2012, with the BMW X5 M50d and BMW X6 M50d following on 16 June 2012. Below are the selling prices of the BMW M Performance Automobiles in Germany, including VAT (19%):

This is news? I figured once BMW slapped the M badge on an SUV, most people would realize the M division means nothing anymore.

They used to do that in the 80s and 90s. they called it M Technic, remember?
its nothing new. While some of BMWs moves are not what purists and enthusiast like, we all need to remember, theyre in the business of selling cars.
Thats their 1st and #1 priority. So some rules will change as the times change.
Hell, 15 years ago, BMW used ot say, a M car cant be an automatic, cant be a SUV, cant be turbo? well, we have all of those now.

I think at the end of the the M division tester, engineers and all, wont sign off on a full on M car, if it doesnt behave like one, even though that is changing too. but a M package, thats nothing new, all that is, is the BMW section borrowing goody parts from M division and slapping them on regular cars, and charging a premium.
Does it dilute the M brand? maybe, but for sure what it does, is gives those that wouldn't think of an M, or want a M and would consider an alternative, and it gives them an appetizer if you will.
Thats what the ZHP was, a cry for a M sedan, and BMWNA pressured BMWAG to make a package above the norm for those E36 M Sedan drivers wanting to upgrade. The sh1t did so well, it ended up on the coupe and cab.
Its business, and BMW is good at it, and they need to, that way they will be around for a LOOOOOOOOONNGG time.

I think its similar to AMG. Mercedes slaps that on just about every one of their cars if the customer is willing to pay $$$

Theyre def following MBz with this too. Now the F30 comes in trims, very similar to MBz, sport, and elegance packages, but only 3 instead of MBz 2.

At the moment I have no problem with this since they have only released diesels. I've never heard of a M diesel so at the moment this idea is fine with me. Later if/when they release gasoline powered vehicles I might have a change of tune

I think I recall someone saying that the M division is looking in to diesel for their future actual ///M cars?

But, I have no problem with the M badges. As others have said, M-B & Audi are doing the same. Even other companies like Dodge are doing it. ex: SRT-x/SRT

I think this is being done to have a market offering to compete with Audi's S and RS lines. For example M3 vs. RS4, and M335 vs. S4. It used to be that S4s were similar to 335s, but lately Audi has stepped up the S4, so is this BMW's response ?
