My guess is 729 was the suits reading. They hadn't done all the calculations to get the true speed. The calculation was explained earlier today in the thread. EDIT: Post #168

He was in a stable free fall and conscious, so I believe he opened it, but the information about how long in free fall he was may have been misinterpreted causing him to open 20 something seconds too early, missing the record.
He pulled his own main canopy - his parachute rig was surprisingly similar to off-the-shelf sport parachute rigs, with the addition of a drogue system and some other modifications. 20 seconds at reasonable altitudes is 4000 feet, so it would have been close if he was able to beat the freefall record.

The "automatic" part was a modified CYPRES AAD (Automatic Activation Device) on his reserve canopy, which cuts the reserve closing loop if he is still in freefall at a low altitude. Normal CYPRES units are standard and are used by most skydivers worldwide.

I don't think they were trying to break the freefall record. Hard to do that and the speed record at the same time...

I saw a blurb online somewhere last week that said there would be a sonic boom, but it would be so quiet due to his small surface area that no one would be close enough to hear it.

I saw it live and only saw 729mph, but its says they corrected it and HE DID BREAK THE SOUND BARRIER at Mach 1.24 833.9mph. What made the live numbers so off?
