Even more power from your M52tu/M54

That is, unless you have a 3.0 liter motor: (but keep reading anyhow)

If you remember correctly, I have a M52TuB25, and I swapped an intake manifold from a M54B25. A relatively inexpensive modification that had very good results.

and
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1253773)

Back then, I had theorized that the B25 intake manifold would be better for my application compared to the B30:

"
Why did I choose the B25 manifold?
People who have 2.8 engines might want to consider the 3.0 manifold, as I went with the 2.5 because I felt its VE would correctly match up with my 2.5, and because from the dynos I had collected (I have over15 or so) on the M52/54 engines, it seemed like the 325 peaked hp higher, and held peak torque longer. (donít take my word for it, compare dynos for yourself. 30-40tq drop off from peak to redline with the B30 manifold, 20-30tq with the B25. B25 peaks power over 6000rpm, B30 peaks it at, or below 6000rpm.)

Regardless of what you choose, both manifolds will be a step up from stock, and should maintain low end power (maybe increase it, but I didnít notice any change), furthermore the installation of either manifold should be fairly similar (the 3.0 has a bigger opening from the TB, but that is all)"

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...0&postcount=44

But since then, I ran across this the other night prowling the internet for information:

The M54B30's pipes have been shortened 20mm [compared to the M52tu intake manifold] and their cross section has been increased.
http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showpos...5&postcount=16

This info has also been confirmed on a technical PDF put out by BMW to highlight the differences between the M52tu's and the M54's.

So what is the point of all this?

Glad you asked (or didn't...)
It's to help you make a bit more power by changing the intake manifold on your Mx series engine. But which one? You can recall above I thought the B25 was a better manifold, but it seem I was mistaken, as someone took the liberty of dyno testing the M54B30 manifold on a the M54B25

"Test vehicle E46 325 with M54B25 MY2001. FInal performance: 142kW/ 193hp following DIN70200 (Bosch LPS 02).

Changes: Intake manifold from M54B25 exchanged for an intake manifold from a M54B30.

(translated for you)
*Final performance: 145kW/ 197hp following DIN70200 (Bosch LPS 02).

Maximal perfomance difference compared to the standard intake is 6,5ps at 4300 RPM.
Here are some comparisons between the two dyno charts:
performance difference in hp at Rev:
4.5ps at 3300 RPM
2.0 3640
4.2 3980
6.5 4320
4.2 4660
3.7 5000
3.3 5340
3.5 5680
4.2 6020"

http://www.bmw-syndikat.de/bmwsyndik...OPIC_ID=100301

Needless to say, if you have a M54 powered car already, don't switch. And if you Have an M52tu powered car, grab a B30 manifold if you can, otherwise, I doubt you'll miss the average of 3.5whp across the board.

*Cliffs
M54B30 manifold is the best manifold for all M52tu and M54 powered cars, though a M54B25 manifold will work well too.

So a M54B22 and B25 engine should be plug and play to swap a M54B30 intake manifold in there? All i need is the DISA, manifold, do I even need the Tuner Motorsport adapter?

^ Can't tell you that for sure. I know the opening for the TB is actually larger on the B30 manifold compared to the B25

So will I yield gains from swapping into a B30 if i already have a M54 engine however a B22 intake, I have 320i which is a 2.2L hence the B22.

Correct, though unless I could find a B30 manifold for cheap, I wouldn't bother.

I have a 328 and my main worry is would I lose low-end torque with this modification?

This thread is gold, I wonder how much would it gain with headers, intake manifold and shark tune...

Rather than just changing the inlet manifold, could you not swap the entire intake system from a M54 - i.e. M54 inlet manifold, MAF, airbox etc.

Nice write up. Am I reading your chart correctly that the M54B30 manifold only adds 4hp to the M54B25 engine?

Yes, but it could be more when the top end is opened. Remember the B30 has better camshafts than the M52tu/M54B2x
