S54 Turbo vanos setup. 1060 WHP/1130Nm & 1167 WHP/1300Nm

A couple of friends of mine have been pushing the S54 turbo setup for quite a while now. They have togheter with the help of PPF in Sweden been thinkering with the dual vanos setup witch is a big gamechanger in producing mid range V8-ish torque witch improves driveability and power delivery insanely. (Needs to be boost controlled through the rev range to save the gearbox)and increases driveability and makes it possible to fit a much lager turbo and get a longer and higher power curve with no sacrifice on spool up time

To give you an example. A PT7675 on a non-vanos S54 can do 1000whp. With vanos it can only do 850whp because of the difference in exhaust back pressure generation. That is sick!

This week one of them (driving a E30 2 door with a fully buildt S54B32 with BW380 80mm turbo and 1060whp (2.2bar) / 1130Nm(@6300rpm) (833 lbs?) and E85 fuel) took the car to a track day festival and let it rip.

(Fully build S54 with forged pistons, rods, ARP bottom and top, L19s in top, Athena cooperring PPF headgasket, titan retaniers and heavy duty spring, stock cams, active vanos, MaxEcu EMS, homemade intake and exhaust manifold, BW380 80mm, 60mm wastegate, tilton clutch and E85 fuel are the rough spec)

Another friend of mine, with a E21 (The former YouTube 1000whp silver one): also has a fully build S54B32, this time with Precision 8284 (82mm) turbo. He also uses E85 fuel. He went to PPF and dynoed in their Dynpack until the figures on the screen was 1167WHP / 1300 Nm torque (6500 rpm / 2.2 bar) - and then followed by a big red ERROR message from the bench. It couldn't hack it any more! They had to reduce torque in mid range also.
So they pegged it down to a Dynapack friendly 1111 WHP & 1100Nm ;D

Both cars are mapped by PPF in Sweden witch have been developing these S54 dual vanos setups for some years now, and use MaxxEcu's from Sweden and have a preloaded program witch enables them to set up the engine very qucikly and cheap. Setting up dual vanos cams in the ECU could take days of testing, and many tuners don't even manage to set them up even remotely correct.

Lets hope it's just the start for S54 vanos application in boosted engines. Purpose made cams and some more clever work with the vanos could make it even better (?). Lets hope so..

And by the way. These engines have stock cylinder liners.

Here is some more. Including some propper burnouts at the end, with and without straight pipes.

At 4:40 the real good stuff

Obviously VANOS affects when the exhaust (and intake) valves are open, but how does this increase in ebp?

Would have it at a guess that sacrificing boost during overlap, and accounting for it in the air fuel ratio would equate to cooler running, more power potential.

WOW, that's one hell of a flat torque curve. Are you guys running stock 260/260 duration cams? What are your thoughts on some of the staggered set-ups, 280/272 in particular, on a boosted S54?

I'm not looking to run anything close to what you guys are putting down, but I'd like to try and squeeze a nice flat 500rwtq on stock DME with an EFR 9180. Also in the slow process of fabricating a P54 (replica) dual plenum intake for much improved air distribution.

Not looking for you to post any of your trade secrets, if that's the case, but definitely would like to pick your brain further.

We use stock cams. We havent tried any other cams yet. And i really dont se any reason to go for any other camshaft yet. We have sick power band whit the stock cams and vanos. Even with the precision 8284 gt47 turbo its strong from the bottom. And the powerband is still staigth upp on 8000rpm:-)
