BMW 330ci starter question

So a repair shop told me that had to get a "sport" version starter since my car is not the normal 330ci it's the sport model and a normal starter for a 330ci wouldn't work do differences like that really matter between base 330ci and sport 330ci?!

Go find a different shop. They have no idea what they are talking about.

There may be differences in the starter between the 5 speed and the 6 speed, but I'm pretty sure they are all the same.

The only thing I can think of is that...

A: The shop called a parts place who asked if the vehicle is sport or not (just to get through the search narrowing terms in their database) and now thinks that because knowing whether your car was sport or not was necessary to find the starter... they think that it actually makes a difference.

B: They are scamming idiots

One thing that does come to mind is that its possible that different starters got used on cars with cold weather packages. Such as cars like mine from Canada. (Just a theory/possibility, no facts to back this up)

Which is why I supply my own parts if I ever need to take it to a mechanic. I make it clear (in a non-dick head way) that all I want him to do is swap the part(s) out. If he does any unauthorized work, I tell him that he can go suck a big one and I'm not paying for it.

Here's your starter:
