If you are traveling internationally, be aware

So today I went to the DFW airport to check in for my flight to Frankfurt.
The lady behind the counter scanned my passport and told me I couldn't fly today. So I asked why and she said my passport expires in less than 3 months.

I checked my passport when I bought the tickets and it expires september 1. I told myself it was fine because I was leaving and coming back before the expiration date.

So now I have to go to the dallas passport office monday at 8 with a copy of my boarding pass and proof of travel. She rebooked me for monday afternoon. They will make me a new passport for $195 on the spot so providing all goes as planned, I will be able to leave monday.

So the lesson learned was that you should never let your passport get down to 3 months before expiration if you plan on travelling internationally anytime soon.

Hopefully this will help out and none of yall will need to deal with this sh*t. Its a terrible feeling to go to the airport excited for a vacation and have to go home for some bs like this

then what's the point of the expiration date? why wouldn't they just make the real expiration date however many years minus 3 months if it becomes useless at that time?
that's like saying oh yeah that milk expires on the 14th but you can't drink it after the 11th because it turns into instant mold.

True as hell. I read up on the laws on the way home in the cab and apparently its because the max allowance to be abroad is 90 days without a visa and if something were to happen that would require me to stay there the full 90 days I wouldn't have an issue with an expired passport. It makes sense in theory but still is stupid imo

Its exactly what you said about the 90 days... blows and stupid and I'm sure your embassy would be more than helpful in a serious problem but these little details can really screw things up. Exact thing happened to my Dad. Have fun in Frankfurt... got a cousin that lives there.

Then again, what would be the point of having an expiration date set 3 months out?

You get a passport to TRAVEL ABROAD. If you can't leave the country in the last 90 days it is valid, what is the point?

Yeah my aunt and cousins live there too haha. What part of frankfurt? I'm over that initial shock of what the hell now I'm just over it. Hopefully the passport office will be nice enough to grant me one. I got an appointment at 2pm but my flights at 4 so if I walk in at 8 when they open they may or may not help me

I agree that it is ridiculous that they refused to let you travel. They just go by the maximum allowed time frame that you are able to stay in that given country and if your passport expiration date is under that then they will refuse to let you travel. I just never make it an issue to get THAT close to the expiration date. I actually have to renew my passport soon because my expiration date is coming up in October and I plan to travel at the end of the year. I already had to deal with sh!tty customer service provided by Delta, so I want my travel experience to go as smoothly as possible. I just want to go in and out without any hassle (that's what she said).

That I do not know. I try to make an effort not to be placed in that situation abroad.

I don't think it's "common sense" that the expiration date is not the real expiration date.

i think it's commons sense to think that it's common sense that the expiration date IS the expiration date no matter if it's 3 months before or 3 days before.

It is always recommended to get it renewed 6 months before expiration. Why? I dont know. Is a German visa valid for more than 90 days?
