Post e 46 engine knock (after oil change to non-synthetic oil) -attached video as well

I change my regular bmw oil to 10w 30 shell non- synthetic oil from bjs and 1 week later my engine makes that noise as you can see in the video. I am concern about this, could you please tell me if you experience something like this. Could this be due to oil change? or is it vanos?

ITS 2001 325i with 184k,
always used bmw fluid until last week

its the video of my car below link:

can't really hear it but knocking isn't good. usually that's a bearing. why did you switch to non-synthetic?

How much oil did you put back in? Did you check the dipstick recently?

I doubt that oil is causing knocking. I can't listen to the video at work, but I'm just gonna recommend that you go back to what BMW specified (LL-01 Synthetic) so you can eliminate oil as the cause. What was the reason you went to non-synthetic? It is inferior in almost every way.

Here's a no nonsense breakdown of what you're doing:
- You're putting an inferior and WRONG oil, sacrificing the protection of your engine
- Being conventional, it will have to be changed out more often than the 5w30 synthetic
- You'll do 3-4 times the work, and pay for labor costs if not changing it yourself
- You pay more money.
- Engine knocks back at you.

You should put in CHEAP oil in a BRAND new engine not in an engine that is close to 200K miles. The new engine can most likely handle its not one that has been around the world.

The older the car the more care it requires.

You have state an effect, and tell us what probably caused it, then expect us to say something different?

I don't understand why people insist on talking over their engine video. I can read faster than I can waste my time listening to you talk about things I've already read. Just rev the damn engine up.

To the OP: YOU PUT DINO-OIL IN A BMW STRAIGHT 6?!??!?! IT DOESN'T COST THAT MUCH MORE THAN REGULAR OIL!!! And now, my initial reaction to reading your post:

I agree. It sounds more like "puff" than a knock. Could be exhaust or emission controls system. It will take time and patience to find.

Despite the fact that you put oil that no fanatic would endorse in your engine, I doubt that oil would cause something to happen this soon after an oil change. If it is a knock, it's been a long time developing.

Look like it loses one cylinder, check the spark plugs to see anyone of them get loose or oil on it.
Anyway, did it trigger the CEL?

Cheaping out by 20 - 30 bucks and risking a high performance enegine in a car that was over 40K new sounds like the dumbest thing., I am usually never critical on these posts, i understand people make mistakes and sometimes the intention were good. But seriously man if you want cheap out that bad you should not be driving a BMW period. Change back to the original oil it will last you longer and actually save you money on the long run as the frequency of oil changes is reduced. Moreover religiously maintaing not only equals the amount of work you put in but also what parts and fluids you use in your car. Though I am not sure what causes the knock, I am pretty sure the knocking starting only after the change in oil is no mere coincidence. BMW is offering value service for e46 go to any dealer and ask for it. Its $79 for an oil change and well worth it and gives you a peace of mind and your engine will last longer. Check this link for value service info

Update:

I flushed the engine(gunk)
Changed the oil to original

Than:
I drove it around the block and Notice a check engine light ( P0155)
Also, noticable power loss,
When rev the engine knocking sound increases,

Note: i had a rod-knock on my old wrx before my e46, damn car just died after 10 miles of driving with knock, could this be the issue with e 46 also

looks like an oxygen sensor code. could probably have a large vacuum leak as well. i've seen and heard a large vacuum leak cause a bunch of knocking noises and ruckus in an e46
