DIY: Diagnose and Eliminate Your BMW E46 SERVICE ENGINE SOON Codes!

This DIY is simple and FREE!

PART 1: DON'T BE SCARED


You are driving and your yellow SERVICE ENGINE SOON (SES) lamp, same as Check Engine Lamp (CEL), comes on beneath the fuel gauge area.



99% of the time this lamp means there is a fuel/oxygen-engine input error or engine-exhaust/emissions output error. Sounds simple enough but in the world of engine input/output errors the causes of that SES/CEL can be hundreds of different things.

Even a loose gas cap will make your SES/CEL come on. So always check your gas cap first when you see that lamp. Coinciding with the SES/CEL sometimes will be rough cold engine idle and/or repeated engine stalling. Also your MPGs can worsen on a SES/CEL. The car can also feel like it lacks power and acceleration. Exhaust sound, color and odor may also change.

The BMW E46 glove box booklet instructs you to take the car to the nearest BMW Dealership as soon as possible since most cases the car is usually in good driveable condition after the SES/CEL warning lamp comes on. DO NOT DO THIS!


PART 2: LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES
One of the biggest financial mistakes I made in my life was taking my car to BMW Of Manhattan back in 2004 for a SES/CEL that lit up on the odometer shortly after I purchased my first car; a 1995 318i BMW E36.

As a first time car buyer I felt obligated to pay any amount of money to get my new-to-me car fixed "properly" at a reputable BMW Dealership thinking that was the only option available to me.


When said and done BMW charged me $2,800 to replace nearly everything under the hood relating to engine air/fuel input and I still had the SES/CEL lit up on my odometer with constant rough engine idle and stalling. They even replaced the ignition cylinder and starter in a failed attempt to remedy the engine stalling.

They were on the verge of invoicing me to replace the entire engine to remedy the recurring SES/CEL when I ran out of money and took my car back.



The culprit as it turned out was my Throttle Body and ICV being very dirty and in need of cleaning via a simple $3 can of carb cleaner something the BMW Dealership never even checked!

I only learned the solution from one of the BMW forums after doing a quick GOOGLE search.

In fact a dirty ICV is a popular cause of the CEL and engine stalling on high mileage E36 M42 engines.

How an entire BMW Dealership of trained technical mechanics overlooked that is still a mystery to me.

The lesson I learned is to pull the codes yourself or get them pulled for free then use the BMW SES/CEL Engine Codes List (below) to decipher the codes and figure out the best way to go about fixing the issue.

Any idiot can pull the codes and interpret them based on what is most profitable to their shop or dealership but only you can interpret them based on what will actually fix the car and save you money and time.

In the world of BMW Stealerships and Get Rich Quick Shops no one is working overtime to save you money or time. Even if you can't fix a SES/CEL issue yourself in your home driveway or garage taking your car to the shop or dealership knowing exactly what to you need to repair/replace will STILL save you A LOT of money and time. Guaranteed!


PART 3: HOW PULLING AND READING CODES WORK

The numerical codes for SES/CEL can be pulled in a matter of seconds after connecting a laptop with BMW Software to the OBDII interface located in the driver's footwell area.




You can also use a specialized OBDII reader tool.






The are a lot of SES/CEL codes and they are displayed in this fashion: P0001 or the letter P followed by four numbers.

The SES/CEL codes tend to have generic definations and mostly point to a general region within the engine structure that is problematic.

If you are lucky some codes point to specific problems like burnt out Oxygen Sensors or non-working MAF that need replacing or cleaning.

Most times you will see multiple codes. This may not necessarily mean multiple issues per se but can point to one issue that is causing multiple problems.

BMW charges anywhere from $165 to $225 plus taxes and fees just to read and diagnose your SES/CEL codes.

The flaw with BMW's methodology for tackling engine SES/CEL codes is they will immediately want to replace the MOST EXPENSIVE part first to the least expensive part last until the SES/CEL lamp is gone.

A popular example is the MAF. The codes for the MAF simply imply that the MAF is not functioning as it should. It has been well documented over the years that over 95% of cars that get MAF codes are the result of the MAF being dirty (usually due to a dirty air filter or a torn intake/MAF rubber boot). The MAF generally only needs to be cleaned to get rid of the SES/CEL lamps. This is something you can do for free in a matter of minutes with no special tools.

BMW will pull the same codes for a faulty MAF and 100% of time they will invoice you to replace the rather expensive MAF before considering that the MAF is dirty or air flow around the MAF is bringing dirt to the MAF. BMW charges a few hours labor and almost $1,000 in parts for their solution which means squat if the rubber intake boots are still torn and the air filter is still dirty.

Indy specialist shops will charge less than BMW to read the codes and but can charge the same fees to diagnose them.

AutoZone and other local commercial chain Auto shops will pull the codes for free but will obviously charge for their opinions or diagnosis on what the codes mean!

However if you know a fellow E46fanatic or friend with an OBD coder/reader then you can pull your own codes for free!

Once you have the codes write them down and use the list below to find out what your specific issue is. Usually GOOGLE Search or the BMW forums seach button will reveal what others have done to solve certain issues for the codes to clear up the SES/CEL.

P0320 Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit Malfunction

The ignition engine speed sensor input signal to the PCM is continuously monitored. The test fails when the signal indicated that two successive erratic profile ignition pickup (pip) pulses have occurred.

Possible causes:
1. Loose wires / connectors

2. Arcing secondary ignition components (coil, wires and plugs)

3. On board transmitter (2-way radio)

I know this is an old post, but I thought I would ask a question about it anyway:
I thought there were BMW specific codes that a regular OBDII scanner will not recognize, or they will give you an incorrect code or definition. Are you saying that the scanner you listed will also pull these BMW specific codes, like the specialized scanners such as the Peake R5/RCX-3?
I was under the impression that this is why Peake sells a specialized BMW scanner. Am I wrong about this?
