Don't ask them... Just keep going out with friends. The past four girls I've dated, three have been meeting through mutual friends. Granted none of them have really worked out. The current one seems to be getting serious, but that's a rant for another day

Follow-up: Had a coffee date and made future plans but she didn't follow through, made a lame excuse, etc. What's the problem with just saying "no" from the beginning and not leaving the other person guessing and investing time?

Just me, but I always preferred not to make specific plans for date 2 during date 1... Sometimes people get caught up in the moment and it can be more beneficial to let things sit for a little while. Besides there is no rush.

I would wait for her to reschedule and just go about your business (in class too).

Yeah, I pretty much decided that she's not into me - its not a big deal. If she makes an initiative I'll chalk it up to poor previous communication and go from there.

my friend broke up with his girlfriend after dating and living together for 5+ years
they've been broken up close to 3 months now
and he has cut off all communication with her

when we were hanging out over the weekend, i let it slip that she's dating someone new

Had a date on fri..for some reason it didn't go as great as the last few. She used to text me a lot and I'd give simple answers and cut it off as to not get boring and be too available. After the date fri she's gone kind of cold. Not sure what it is, it is definitely getting in my head though. Example, I sent her a message to see how the rest of her weekend went, and her response didn't really provoke any further convo..contrary to before..Think I might be losing my edge with her..so should I just go cold for a bit and seek out other women in the meantime?

chill for a few days and see how it goes. If she doesn't contact you by like friday send her a text about what she's up to this weekend. If she doesn't want to get together back off and move on.
