It happens, I even posted a fs thread a bit back but changed mind. Things like doing a CCV job will get me thinking I need a new car.

Did you modify before the subframe tore? This common issue gives me tons of anxiety every time I think I've hit a crack in the road maybe too fast. |

When the gas price hit above $1.30/litre, I wish I had a Prius. Then i test drove my friend's Honda civic 5sp. Nothing like the precise steering and solid hard clutch of the BMW.
No, I would walk and bus than to give up my e46. |

The first year I had mine it was like a slot machine. I didn't know if it'd be in the shop the next day or working. Finally someone figured out I had a bad computer that was causing all the problems. After that it's been fine and I make sure I keep up with it. I love my car now and plan on keeping it for a good while.

...but, one can argue...here's E36's "checklist" of things that usually go bad: - window regulators - coolant system - torn subframe - ungluing headliner/interior/door panels - trunk-lid wiring ...ironically, this probably sounds familiar to a E46 fanatic...even to the one who hasn't heard a thing about E36. ![]() Still, I stand by my point - E46 IS a much better built car. |

Almost every day...and today was the last straw, so I'm putting it up for sale.
I got the car with 140K miles about 5 years ago. About a week after that, I noticed the wipers were streaking the windshield...you know, not really clear. The dealer wanted like $10 for a set of new blades...and just the fn rubber filler things. For $20, I could've bought a whole new arm...really bmw...you're not all that much. Then, just last week, I get this warning light, some inexplicable picture of something or other...had to dig out my manual to discover it's the washer fluid is low. Sure enough, I check and it is. I like never use the washer, so what's the deal. That bottle is only like 10 L too...you'd think they could make it bigger so crap like that doesn't happen! ![]() Anyway, that's it for me...POS cars. You guys enjoy yours, but it's not worth the trouble for me...POS! |

I'm sure once I get this thermostat job done I'll feel better about it. I just remember my e30 I never had work that needed to be done, it just worked amazingly, and i drove it for 5 years and drove it hard.

Chad, you're going to be very disappointed you got this car if you look at it this way. You've done nothing on it. And if you want to feel better about it, you should read more cooling threads, I think. Don't know your mileage, but for $300 you can do the whole cooling system and be secure for another 4-5 years or more.
Replacing only therm, you might get lucky, but odds are you'll need to do more soon. Also, if that's really all you've done, please inspect your pulleys and belts. If one pulley is bad, do them all. If you don't want to sell it like me, you should also replace wiper blades and top off the washer fluid!

All the pulleys were tight and silent. Checked them when I got the radiator fan off.
I'm happy with my wiper blades and have a full fluid container as well. I'm sure I'll cheer up about it all once this thermostat stuff is done. It just stresses me out with this car. Then again, my e30 was the same way when I first got it. |

hahahahahahaha ... I tough I was the only one that has invested on past year and half; spark plug, all fluids flush, all new filters, new fuel pump, new maf,new alternator, new battery, new water pump, new thermostat, new belts, new valve cover , new intake boots, new hoses, new shocks/spring an spring rubber. Aaaaaahhhhhh!!!
Still need vanos, disa, all pillars need replace, need tinted windows, need tires, need brake kit, need control arm bushings and all other bushings M tech bumper (front) 400$ but. Oh boy when I sit on it I get that love! tells me! Don't give up! Next year you will have it all finish! over all..2500$-3000$ spent! I think... Need stuff probably another $2500. (not including tools) DIY 5k after all ... Should I still be worried after all this maintenance done or might a well 400$ monthly payment? But damn broke college student with payments makes no since. Oh well keep the e46"xi and try your best save money and plan on what you need first.. Every car has maintenance ! But not all cars can get close to what a e46 drivability feels like. |

I get frustrated but never want to sell it. Tracking down a leak which will most likely turn out to be a simple vapor barrier issue. Will continue to drive this car until it falls apart.

E30 is a beautiful car! I would so trade my E46 for an E30 today!! Actually my E46 has been very good to me. I just do the regular maintenance and get it done, so the guy says ohh this is going to fail, this is going to go bad, this is crap, let s do this, lets do that. and i let him do it. today i got my vanos done, complete coolant overhaul and tons more stuff that i can't even spell.

I do sometimes. In the past few months - Alternator, window switch, and now a cracked rim- on top of all the rattling going on in the car. its old and I know it.
