not bragging, just curious:
see my sig and the mileage indicated. (more now) I have never done a thing to my trans. I feel like I shouldn't mess with it at this point as it already has (2x at least) the miles on it as others who have had trouble. not now or ever have I had one issue. should I continue to leave well enough alone at this point? PS. I use the step most all the time.

BMW states many of the transmission have life time fluid. But the manufactures often claim the fluid needs to be changed. We choose to side with the companies which make the transmissions.

Thanks for the clarification guys. Last time I read up on a thread like this, people were using codes and unreleased manuals to try to determine what fluid to use

For the E46 M3 diff? I suggest the genuine BMW Motorsport Rear Differential Fluid or a good quality 75w140 gear oil such as the one from RedLine or Motul.

Hey guys! We've put together a pdf to help anyone out who's looking to service their transmission. Now remember this is a write up for the E39 525i but the process is very similar on other cars, this makes for a great guide!
HERE is a link to the pdf
