Your opinion-new tire needed?

One of my cars just got road damage on the side wall of the tire. At first I was going to have it replaced with a new one, even though it has 8/32 tread. But two tire mechanics at Costco looked at it and said it was very minor and no need to replace.
The damage is almost 1/4 inch long and about 1/8 inch deep--on the side wall. It appears that some type of metal object on the road must have hit it (and also left a dent on the wheel cover).
Your thoughts?

Sorry I can't picture an 1/8 of an inch. Sidewall damage=replace, unless it's superficial/not close to the threads.

I definately woudn't run them on the front if they are questionable.
